FJ40/FJ60 mash-up
« on: Nov 29, 2014, 07:45:41 AM »
I have a basket case 1974 FJ40 and a 1985 FJ60 parts truck and want to make a decent FJ40.

The FJ40 was V8'd with a toyota trans and transfer case a couple of owners ago.  The guy before me got rid of the toyota trans/transfer case/ and rear axle.  He bought a SM465/205/ford 9" to put in it. The front LC axle has been re-drilled to 5x5.5 to match the bronco rear axle.  He also kept the AA bellhousing in the pile just in case.  Current suspension is spring under with Big Dicks 4" lift springs.

I'm thinking about taking the transmission, transfer case, axles, springs, power steering and maybe the A/C unit from the FJ60 along with the AA bell housing and build a spring-overed FJ40.

Anybody see anything wrong with this plan?

Any other FJ60 parts from the donor that I should try and work into the FJ40?

I can't believe I let this thing sit for so long without even mocking it up.  I bought it in pieces and moved it straight to my dad's barn.

Even though I plan on doing some welding to repair the cut quarter panels, I'm tempted to try and polish the paint.  I've never owned anything this old with original paint.

Its going lower.  This was the first swing.

I need to build a step in the rear frame to raise the IRS assembly.  Front should come down quite a bit when the engine and trans are installed.

Do you like the FJ40, the FJ60, or both?

The 60 was not originally planned, it started out as a "how are we gonna move it around without axles?" discussion.  The jag stuff was in the barn....and it looks like it should work as more than something to make it roll.

I can probably come down 4 inches without having to cut the rear floor depending on how brave I get with the notch

I bought some serious rubber for the FJ60.  ...two sets of C5 Corvette rear wheels (18x9.5).  I guess it is turning into a pro-touring.

275/35/18 front and 295/35/18 rear tires

I picked up a chevy 5.3 for the FJ40.  I'm going to hook it up to the fj60 4 speed.

When hooking a LS engine to a Toyota 4 speed via a AA bellhousing....can I use a 2005 chevy truck flywheel (.400 longer to match ls crank) and the 1968 Checker 6 cylinder clutch like a normal SBC to Toyota swap?  What throw out bearing and pilot bushing do I need?
