5th from R154 to R150
« on: Sep 25, 2014, 12:51:17 PM »
Hello! I am wondering if anybody knows would it be possible to install a 5th gear from a R154 (supra) to R 150?
It would be great to have .75 instead of .84.
Thanks.

I believe all 5th gears can be swapped between R series.
I just put together an R154 AX15 hybrid.
I used the AX15 case and main shaft (matches tail housing) and the R154 gears minus 5th gear.
So I can sell you the complete 5th gear assembly from an R154.

ONE ISSUE:
Since I was using the AX15 main shaft, I used the AX15 5th gear because it has a spacer as part of the gear to fit the space for it on the shaft. The R154 5th gear is the same size but without a built in spacer. Instead it has a sleeve spacer before the tail housing bearing.
I also have this spacer and bearing for sale.

If you have an R150 2WD, then all the R154 parts should shift over because the tail housing is the same between R154 and R150 and the tail housing bearing should hold the 5th gear spacer on.

If you have the 4WD R150F, then I'm not sure how the 5th gear attaches.

Let me know if you want these parts from a rebuilt/never used R154 because I have them listed separately on eBay and I should cancel them so you can get the whole package because it can be very difficult to find individual R154 parts.

To help illustrate, I drew you some pics

I believe the R150 (2WD) and R154 are like this

So if you have the R150F 4x4 and not R150, I believe you have the fatter gear, that means you would need a spacer. IIRC it would be about 1&1/8" I.D. and about 1/4" long. Pretty doable.

I put together my AX15 R154 combo and when I bench tested it, the overdrive was about .6
I was a bit confused by this, since I was expecting the AX15 ratio of .79
Turns out the R154 counter gear ratio is different and that makes a .63 5th gear

Since I want an overdrive closer to .75, I'll have to use the R154 5th gears with a spacer to fit on the AX15 output shaft. I will need a ring spacer about 5/16" which I'm having fabricated

71hornet6 Do you still have? I just need the output shaft part of 5th.
