ToyYoda's 1994 Pickup Build Thread
« on: Sep 25, 2014, 09:22:08 AM »
Hi everyone,

This is my first post and also my first build thread.  I decided to rebuild my 1994 Toyota Pickup a few years ago and finally got a chance to get started on it about a year ago.  Its a slow build and I wanted to start a thread more to document the build for myself and also to get input from the Marlin community as I go along.  I'm currently in the tear down and collect parts phase but hope to begin putting some things back together soon.

Here is my truck before any work began.

And here is a picture after removing a few things...

Currently the truck is down to the frame and all the IFS stuff has been removed.

I'll post more pictures of how she currently sits and some of the goodies waiting to get installed soon.

Here is how she currently sits as a bare frame with all the IFS components chopped off and a new front spring hanger and rear spring hangers tacked in place.

I'm actually from Texas and the truck spent most of its life in west Texas.  I was very surprised when I saw it how bad the rust on the frame was.  The engine, front axle, tranny and transfer case are all in good shape.

Plus it has a new gas tank for some reason.

Started cleaning up the front axle.

Also, started to remove the old brackets so that I can get ready to install some front axle armour from Marlin and All Pro.

Also, picked up a set of these from Dave's earlier this year and currently they are just waiting to find a home...

Also got a FROR Full float kit for the rear axle

Rebuilt both my IFS hubs w/ original Longfield conversion hubs and the SA hubs and cleaned them up a bit.

Gonna run with the SA hubs in the rear for now but still debating if I want to switch over to flanges instead.

rebuilt the IFS calipers and used the 85' hubs w/ FJ rotors and FROR ARP studs for the rear as well.

Got a couple more parts pictures that I've collected over the last year.

Had the IFS hubs turned down to fit Tacoma rotors and also installed FROR's ARP hub studs and knuckle studs as well.  Also cleaned them up and gave them a fresh coat of paint.

FROR Tacoma brackets along with a pair of 99' Tacoma calipers that I got at the local autozone.

I also used the 85' calipers as cores at the local Autozone basically scoring 50 bucks from them.

Also, picked up a set of Trail Gear 4" springs for a decent price and free shipping.  Not my first choice for springs but for the price it was hard to say no.  Might go with Alcans later on down the road once the truck is finished and I get a better idea of total weight and the amount of lift I really want.

Scored a rear shock mount from Daves as well.

Made some progress on the front axle this week by getting all the brackets removed and sand blasted it clean. Hope to get the armor burned in next weekend and then get it painted up

Also, got a new hi pinon front diff with 5.29s and a zip locker from Daves and should have a matching rear arriving soon.

I've also been working on chopping up my rusted out parts truck. I've currently got the back end removed and waiting to head to the scrap yard.  Plan is to get the cab off soon and then pull the motor, trany and transfer case.  The top shift gear box on the transfer case will be used for duals later on.

Was planning to keep the rear springs for possible RUFs at some point but found that some of the leafs are cracked so I'm just planning to add the to the scrap pile now.

Would love to have this thing out of my garage buy the end of the year (and so would my wife)

Looks like a great start!

When you get to mounting the rear shocks keep in mind that you do not need to use the mounts under that hoop, you could mount some new tabs on the side (what will be front / back of the bar when mounted) to take better advantage of shock travel.

Started to burn in the axle armor this weekend and have been taking it really slow so only half way done this point.  I've been welding about 1 inch or less at a time on everything to prevent any kind of warping of the housing.  I'm no expert welder by any means and have only been doing it a short while.  I'm posting a weld pic so if anyone can point out anything I can do better by all means let me know.

Put the old diff back in and installed the stock long side axle and birf to check for any warping of the housing.  axle shaft and birf went in without any trouble so it looks like my painstakingly slow welding was worth while.  Still have a few more welds on the drivers side to finish up and then its on to the passenger side.

Also, need to clearance the balls for the RCVs and the housing for the new front diff then it should be ready to paint and put back together.

And another weld shot from the knuckle ball gussets.

Not all of my welds look like this but more and more are turning out this way

Almost starting to look kinda like a stack of dimes

Made some more progress on the front axle over Thanksgiving weekend.  Got everything welded up and clearanced the knuckle balls for the RCV's and then got it all ready for paint.

Then applied some primer and a couple coats of hammered black/grey

Waited a few days for the paint to set on the axle than installed stud eliminator kit, TG wipers seals and new 25mm trunnion races.  Then threw in the new HP 3rd from Dave's with 5.29 gears and a Yukon Zip locker.

Just need to burn the bumps stops on to the flip kit then I plan to finish installing the new front axle parts and mocking up the front and rear suspension.  Before burning everything in. :flamer:

Managed to get the rear axle mocked up and bolted to the frame yesterday while I wait for bump stops to arrive in a few days.

What do you guys think about the rear shackle angle?  I know it doesn't have any real weight on it and the springs are new but I feel like it should be 5-10 degrees the other way.  I'm thinking about moving the rear mounts forward and inch or so any thoughts?

And one more question for everyone here.  I'm currently deciding on rear shock mounts and have both the standard top mounted bracket and the Low Range bracket that mounts lower on the axle.  Any thoughts on which way I should go?  I'm currently leaning towards the Low Range mount since that would give me slightly more travel room and slightly less /\ angle with Dave's rear shock bar.
