Front Spool
« on: Jul 24, 2014, 09:11:55 AM »
Any thoughts on / experience with a spool in front with manual locking hubs?  I'm thinking of going that route in the interest of money as it'd be way cheaper than getting something selectable like an ARB or electric.  Seems like it'd work fine to me and I've heard of guys doing it but I've also been told not to do it.  Thanks!

Ide go with an aussie locker up front if you dont want to pay for selectable, thats what I put in my dads 4runner and it works great. I'm holding out for ARB.

If u want to go with a full lock full time, just weld it and be done with it.

If u want to be a little nicer on your drivetrain as well as yourself, go with a lunchbox locker. Just my 2 cents.

I vote no on a front spool. Bought an 85 with one in the front and steering was HORRIBLE. Get an aussie or lockrite up front if you want a cheap but reliable locker. Weld or spool the rear.

Hope you have arms like Popeye so you can turn the wheel when the front is bound up against a rock. Even with a detroit it is a pain on my 4runner.

I would rather be open in the front than spool/welded.

I have had an arb in the front for years.  When i would use the locker it was a royal pain to turn in the rocks and such.  SO I vote no against spooled front.  With that said... I know a bunch of people who have spool'd front rigs with hydro assist and they say it isn't a problem at all.  I plan on going hydro assist soon.  With that said, i spent the money on another arb for this dana60 i just put in, just beacuse i don't want to deal with a locked front end on the road when it snows.  Just my thoughts on the matter.

turbo this..
