84 runner altinator problems
« on: Jul 20, 2014, 10:17:57 PM »
Ok I know this topic has been done over and over by many sites and different people but it's hard to find a good solid explication on how to fix this.

So I have an 84 4runner and i have heard about people haVing problems with the altinators. We'll my altinator just stopped working.. brand new altinator at that... so I have put in a new external regulator. I have put in an altinator that I know works and I have checked all of the visible wires under the hood and nothing works. I would like to either go with a newer style toyota internal regulator or a gm 1 wire. Any info on this would help greatly and i would approximate it.

I have had this problem in the past with my 81 and i out a newer style toyota in it and it worked but it took me a long time to figure it out and it was so long ago I forgot how to do it and I lost the wire diagrams I had.

 Thank you for the help

There is a write up on putting the 60 amp 22r/re internal reg alt in the older trucks. Find it on pirate in the toyota faq's,  under  engine upgrades and tech. It'step by step with pics as well as info on all the other alt swaps. I tried to post a link but I failed.

I recently put a 20R in a samurai and I didnt want to use the externally regulated alt. I used an internally regulated alt from a newer 22re , the one with the grey oval plug. The plug has three small wires, white = sense, yellow = charge light, red = keyed hot. The 4th and last wire Is a Large(white I believe) wire that is the main charge wire and is all ready in your truck, that goes to the charge post on your alt. you will also need the alt brackets from a newer 22r/re. With this info and a wiring diagram for your truck you should be able to figure it out.

The gm alt is another option. I almost went that way but decided to keep it simple an Toyota reliable.

Oh and I suck at wiring so take this for what its worth but it worked for me. make sure to test everything with a volt meter as you go.

Perfect. Thanks man. I'm wading if i have a problem with my sense wire on here. Maybe a break in the wire or corroded. But I will probably end up putting a newer one in here.

May not be an alternator problem, some of that style had wiring issues in the loom on passenger side of engine bay
