Tube Fenders on a Toyota????????????? Why not!
« on: Jun 15, 2014, 02:10:03 PM »
OK, my original fenders were trashed, rusted etc. So I picked up a set of giant fiberglass fenders(see my build for pics). Well they crack when you hit trees and fiberglass dust is itchy. :ack: So I've been wonder what could I do to get steel back on the truck and still cover the 36's so I don't have to worry about breakin' the law. First was to get some stock replacement steel and see if I could space them out to cover the tire how it would work and look. This idea has potential but I thought I'd go for the forbidden tube fenders.  :shocking: So using my JD3 and a tube roller on each piece I came up with the following. Wonder how it will look when I get it cover with sheet metal?

First the angled stock look.

And now the layout of the TUBES!

I think I am also going to try this with a 1st gen trail rig my buddy and I are working on. I think I will use round tube though. I can't wait to see how it looks when you finish.

I did square because I think it will be easier to sheet over with the flat surfaces. I hate trying to get sheet to fit right on tube. It was also easier to orient from the JD3 to the roll bender.

I got the sheet metal yesterday, sad thing is I'm getting ready to head out for a long vacation and won't get back to it for a couple weeks.

Ok, I've moved 1800mi back to Washington state and have my big shop back where I can keep the Toy parked inside. This will let me get back to these among other crazy idea projects. Just everything has to be done by the time the snow gets in the mountains.

I had a little time today to piece things together. Not sure if this is how I will leave them or if I'll trim them down more closer to the tube steel framework. I'm definitely filling in the rearward facing hole to contain splashes and rocks. 18ga is way to thick I should have used 20ga at the thickest.
I do like the way they cover the IROK's

Comparison to the fiberglass units I now have.

Good idea.  And I want your old fiberglass fenders!
