Tundra V8 chips & lift/builds
« on: Apr 18, 2014, 05:47:04 AM »
I have been doing some searches and coming up fairly empty handed (for the most part).
I picked up a 2001 Tundra with the V8.
I have been doing some research on the engine chips, getting more positive than negative.
But I am hoping to get some unbiased input (actual usage) from people on the board.
Anyone?
If the numbers come out ½ as good as what I have been reading they would be worth looking at (prices for the chips are way down).
The 2nd question is SAS for the Tundra, again not seeing a lot directed at the Tundra.
Waste of time or worth it?
I have an 84 that I am debating on selling/parting out if I can get the Tundra to a certain level.
3rd recommendations for Tundra specific sites (this one is kind of Tundra lacking, nothing personal).
I am new to them, thought I would end up with another Taco, but the towing aspect changed my mind.

Thanks Gary   :D

I have a 2000 Tacoma(obviously different), but he are my thoughts.

I bought a Unichip for 600

While I do believe there are some small gains, I don't think it is worth it.  I didn't know of any forums and had never seen used superchargers going for $1000

Between the chip and the K&N I could have had a used S/C ....fuel solutions would be more, but the money would have been much better spent.  $/HP or $/Torque gains.  I should've saved my money.  I didn't know better.

So did you gain any mpg with the changes you made? If yes what were the numbers?
I have found chips for under $100, not sure if that is due to how long they have been out of something else?
At this point my Tundra has plenty of power (for what I am using it for & originally I was looking at Tacoma's with V6's). I would chip mine for MPG (mainly). If I can get close to the Taco (for the right price) I would be happier.

On to your lift, what lift do you have and how do you like it?
If I keep my 84 I don't have a lot of reasons to lift the Tundra.

Thanks for your input Gary

When my truck is tuned up with no issues I was getting 20mpg town and 23 highway.  Now that I swappped from 31x10.5 on stocks to 32x11.5 on wider rims I'm 17mpg in town.  My lift is only ICONs in the front until I get my Chevys in the rear.

I'm not sure the Unichip helped MPG.  I hadn't checked before installing the chip.  What brand is $100.00?

Does URD have something for your rig?   MAF calibrator or Sprint booster?

I'd be wary of the chips on these Toyota motors.  They are tuned pretty well.

GForce has one for $69 they list 30 HP/FT LBS increase as well as 10% MPG increase.
Like stated above (at this point) I am happy with the power, looking to try to bump the MPG's up.
Originaly I was going to get a Tacoma with the 3.4 but after some research I and driving the trucks I decided to go with the Tundra.
The towing aspect tipped the scales in favor of the Tundra.
The original plan was to solid axle the Tacoma and sell my 84.
Now I am checking into what it takes to solid axle a Tundra and is it worth it???
Worst case I end up keeping the 84...

GForce is full of it.  For the price I suppose you try it, but I wouldn't.

Where is everyone else here?  No one else has input for a member?

If have the 06 with the 2UZ-FE.. Not really much for power adders out there, easiest and biggest gains available from your 01 to mine is the VVT-I difference. Added like 80 horse straight out of the box.. Next would be your intake then headers, but or sell the 01 engine and buy an updated 2UZ-FE with the VVT-I (Variable Valve Timing) port (injection)... Makes almost 300hp and jumps off the line.
