Project fancy-- Nearly finished.
« on: Feb 19, 2014, 10:03:23 PM »
Well, i broke down and bought a 81' 4x4 for $800.  The donor engine had yet to be installed and was out of an 81 celica. (22r)  Since i had no proof of the condition of the engine it has been completely torn apart.  We found the engine to had virtually no wear; the factory pistons still had all the machine marks and other minor things were in great shape.  Found the #4 cylinder to have the spark plug only threaded halfway in but there was plenty of carbon buildup like someone had been driving it that way.

Long story short pretty much fully rebuilt engine and axles. Waiting to install the noise maker.

Plans for the project are as stock as possible with some fancy things here and there to enhance the pickup functionality wise.

I had gotten pretty lucky with this engine in such great shape but still decided to have a valve job done, head resurfaced, and block decked 10thou.  Everything but the pistons, cam and crank were new put into the engine.

Well, it runs pretty good now.  Didnt imagine being able to drive it this weekend but i can!  Followed a lot of the smog delete stuff from this guy http://www.yotatech.com/f114/22r-desmog-tutorial-264405/

I have some buttoning up to do in the interior, engine bay, and figure out what to do for steering.

So here is how it sits today,  W56. Duals. RUF and 63's.  4.88's and bald 37-14.5-15 tires.  Put a 3rz Dual Ignition Coil engine into it that ended up being bad.  I have found a distributed engine but am wondering what it entails to convert from distributed to DIC.  The harness/computer i have is for a DIC 3rz and the engine i can get is a distributed 3RZ.

And i fit a 99 ish taco column and dash into it.

Don't take it to the bank, but I believe all you'll need to do to make a dizzy engine a dual coil is swap the harness and associated sensors.

Any of them that are different. I wouldn't imagine there are many of any that are different. I can verify this in a few days if you like. My 98 taco is a 2 coil and the 1st gen in running a dizzy.

I've done quite a bit of mismatching different years of 3rz. I could prob tell you what I might do. what happen to the cop motor? block or head damage?

Looks to me that you can just swap the cop harness to the dizzy engine and remove the dizzy. Both have cam position sensors, injector harness looks the same, oil pressure looks the same. Maybe crunchy can tune in on something I'm missing. Looks like a straight forward swap. I could be wrong.

should be able to use the cop harness and cap the dizzy. the only thing you will have to run on the dizzy motor from the cop is the cop throttle body with the iac valve. I believe they're different.

the only other thing would be check the crank and cam position sensors and make sure they have the same number of wires on both motors but I believe the same type of sensors were used pre 2001

Your correct on the iac. I'm sorry I mislead on that. I forgot the iac got changed after dizzy motors.  :hammer:

The original engine got ran dry of oil and seized really bad,  What my truck is set up for right now is the dual ignition coils not coil on plug, so would that mean I still need to mess with IAC valve?

I believe the dizzy engines and dual coil use the same. The cop uses another.

I tried using a 2004 cop throttle body and iac on a 99 dual coil setup and I had idleing problems. I'm not sure if it was the 99 ecm not jiving with it or the way it draws air in for idle. most dual coil years have a breather tube that connects the iac to the air intake pre throttle body but the 01-04 cop iac dosnt have that tube so It gets air another way. as far as the dizzy and dual coil years I used to have both both motor combinations and I remember the iac valves had a different number or wires on the plug. I believe the dizzy iac has 4 and the dual coil iac has 3 wires. whether you can check wiring schematics and figure out what wire does what and still use the dizzy iac for your dual coil wiring and ecm is up to you to figure out I suppose. you may be able to delete one of the 4 wires in order to run the iac on the dual coil depending on what the purpose of the 4th wire is on earlier years.

I apologize for gettin confused earlier in the topic. for some reason I thought you were messin with a quad coil on plug motor. I kno now that your are setup for a dual coil and trying to use s dizzy motor. the easiest way to do things if it were me would be to put you dual coil throttle body on the dizzy motor, coil brackets to hang your ignition coils, cap the distributor, and you should be turn key. they both should have the same egr setups. everything else should be the same.

So I got a 2rz long block and stuffed it all in there with a w-56 and dual cases! Tacoma dash is fairly done.
