Topic: waterpump problems

my waterpump bearing had a little play in it so I ordered a new bosch waterpump from rockauto. received the pump, everything looks the same but the impeller was a little to big and it wouldn't fit in the hole. called rock auto, they didn't know why it wouldn't fit but let me return it with no problems. ordered a gates pump from rockauto, got it today and guess what- same problem. my aisin pump measured roughly 2 3/8" across the impeller and the new ones measure about 2 3/4" across. The previous owner told me my engine was a 20r but the tag under hood says 22r. I checked rockauto and it has the same waterpump part number for both engines. What am I missing? This isn't rocket science but its got me buffaloed.  could a 22re timing cover fit my engine? it carries a slightly different part number

i have a water pump off of my 84 22R I can send to you if youd like.  it has at most 2,000 miles on it.

thanks, i'll let you know. at the rate we're going, you ought to just put all your old parts on a pallet and send them my way!

Pull the p/n off the old pump and crossreference it?

cant find a part number on my old pump. also had the thought of changing impellers on pumps. it looks like I could warm it up and gently pull it off with a puller and put it on my new pump. or just go to napa, orellys and see if they have a 22re pump and measure it to see if its smaller
