Front end is to tall!
« on: Jan 03, 2014, 12:09:13 PM »
I did a sas on my 87 4runner wanted the efi. I had a 79 short bed that I first built and then found a clean 4runner for cheap so I swapped all my stuff from my 79 under my 4runner now the front end is way to tall. What are some ways I can lower the front back down I need at least 2" lower from where I'm at now? I have all pro 6" lift I think the springs say 37 on them. Can I remove leafs or smaller shackle ? Any help would be great!

Both removing a leaf or two and shackles. How long are your shackles eye to eye?

You can shorten your shackles (hopefully they are freakishly long already), increase their angle by moving their hanger forward (hopefully they are nearly vertical already), and you could remove the lower two leafs depending on how many leafs are in your pack (hopefully its a nice fat pack already) .... but of all these things I'm not sure if you're gonna loose a whole 2-inches of lift. That seems like a lot. Even if you did these mods it's questionable how the truck will drive afterwards.

Other options could be to modify the front spring hanger, maybe move each side up half an inch or so closer to the body mounts, and you could reposition the front axle forward on the springs an inch by drilling new center pin holes on your axle's spring perchs that are 1" behind the original holes, which will also remove some height from the suspension because the axle will be forward from the center point of the spring arch ... and this will improve your approach angle at the expense of a stiffer ride, however you'll have to consider drag link geometry changes or possible interference thereof, and also your caster angle will change...

Maybe 2-inches is no big deal, I just don't have that much experience. I've lowered my front end about an inch by running 1" shorter front shackles (went from 6" down to 5"), removed my #2 leaf from the bottom, and moved my axle forward an inch. If I had to go for another 1" more.... not sure if I'd like the results myself short of just replacing the spring and doing it right all together.

Good luck man!

Thanks for the quick replies! Right one my shackles are 5" center of hole to center of hole I might try to remove a leave first and I also want to drop in a 3.4 v6.

The reason it's different than your first gen is the added weight of the 4runner in the rear. But I like lower, smaller shackles is what I would start with

Check these out, I have them in my rear, and lowered my rig nicely.

I took the bottom two out of the spring pack will this hurt anything? It lowered the 4runner a lot I just hope it will be ok to wheel and drive like this.

Try to use the flat bottom leaves from a stock front leaf pack. They keep your spring rate where it needs to be without adding arch.
