Rainbow Garnet Mine - Equipment Extractions
« on: Oct 09, 2013, 10:32:29 AM »
Part I (Sept 21, 2013)
Marlin Crawler helped the 4WD Club of Fresno extract equipment that is upwards to 70 years old from the Rainbow Garnet Mine near the trail head to the Swamp Lake Trail. This is a historical mine dating back to the late 1930s and we were honored to escort Wes, who's family owned the mining claims and who worked these mines as a kid during the Korean War. Our main mission is to get the large Rock Crusher Tumbler which we'll be returning for once we get some more equipment in to help lift the 1,000-pound (?) object and get it loaded into a truck. All of the mining artifacts are being donated by Wes to a museum near Prather, CA. To be continued!

You can see just how large these collars are in comparison to the bottle. They are surprisingly heavier than one would expect.

Part II (Oct 4, 2013)
Marlin went back up to the Mine with Matt from Recycled Toys to extract the massive and heavy International Radiator and transport it to the Museum of the Central Sierra, which is operated by the Central Sierra Historical Society of Shaver Lake, California (http://www.sierrahistorical.org). We were also able to winch the massive ball mill out of the work barn for our final trip to the mine. It was awesome helping with a piece of this historic mine shaft and we are looking forward to returning for the final extraction of the huge ball mill!

Nice pics Mike!  Looks like you guys had fun, even though its work.

That Donkey still operational?  It looks like it.  Most of the ones we find still out in the woods, are all rusted up to where they aren't operational, but still make good museum pieces.

Went back today.

Marlin had already winched the ball mill outside.

We moved it back inside, hoisted it up by a large beam, and rolled the trailer under it by hand.

Then lowered it down onto the trailer.

Took some tight maneuvering to get it out of the building.

Took 2 Toyota's to pull the trailer up this hill.

Lighter load.

Picture of the picture takers.

Stopped in front of the cabin before leaving.

Tamarack Ridge airing up.

Offloading at museum near Sierra High School.

All done.

Wow two Yotas, even with gearing.

Cool pics.

Takes weight to move weight. The ball mill is "HEAVY", and the trailer itself is 900 lbs including the spare tire. He probably could have done it at a higher speed, but that wasn't a good idea with that load.

That would have been cool to watch Marlin hauling that up the hill, and out on the trail.

So, what's the plans of the old mine property?  Just letting it go back to nature?  A private campground?

Would love to own a piece of property like that.

Ran into you guys at Tamarack several weeks ago coming out with old equipment the first time you went up. Great pics! What an opportunity for you to explore an old mine on private property. Looks like you had fun!
My friends call me Tony, but that's classified!

Marlin got back from the 3rd and final round of work and in addition to mountainguyde's pics above, here come ours!

Rainbow Garnet Mine - Equipment Extraction III (final)
We went back up to the Rainbow Mine and pulled out the huge ball mill and the last remaining property from Wes Qualls for a final delivery to the Eastern Fresno County Historical Society Museum! Overall it was a huge success and we learned a lot about our High Sierra history from one really great museum curator and former mine operator!

Here we are at the Park'N'Ride at the bottom of Highway 168's "Four Lanes". This trailer belongs to Ed (mountainguyed67) from the 4WD Club of Fresno and is the only off road trailer we believe capable enough to haul out the huge ball mill! (hopefully!)

This was our first rigging idea, which was to simply hoist up the ball mill, back the trailer under it, and be done. But we weren't able to stabilize the beam from each side as originally planned so the idea was dropped.

This was our first rigging idea, which was to simply hoist up the ball mill, back the trailer under it, and be done. But we weren't able to stabilize the beam from each side as originally planned so the idea was dropped.

So we decided to reposition the Ball Mill and winch it back into the building to use its structure as a hoist.

Now the Crawler truck has to get back up to the main road

Lastly, we pulled out and loaded up any remaining property belonging to Wes that he would like to keep and have transported down the hill to the museum.
