stay with my 33's or go to a 36" tire
« on: Mar 16, 2005, 04:27:21 PM »
I just barely got 33x13.50 swamper LTB's but I know the dude who sold me the tires and he says he can get me a deal on 36x12.50 TSL/SX tires $200 ea.

Since I haven't used the tires at all since it's sitting on jack stands. He says I can still return them and goto a bigger tire.

1. I have 4" of lift pretty sure with some trimming I can run 36's
2. I am geared at 5.29's already so I can turn them
3. I have longfeild birf's installed

What should I do?

I heard some stuff about SX's.
Regular TSL's supposedly sidewalls flex better than the SX tire does.
Do you think the extra $30 for TSL/SX's is worth it or should I just reg TSL's?

Cross poster!!!!  I just saw this on Pirate.   :disturbed:

Another vote for the 36's...I switched to 35's from 33's, you will love the extra 1.5 inches under the pumpkin...makes a world of difference.
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

Ya 36's are about the max I am gonna do for now since I wheel in wooded area's where tree's hang low.
Thanks guys.
The deal is in the works I think I am going to just do the 36x12.50 TSL's and not the TSL/SX's.

I am on the East coast where I wheel is in thick underbrush trails unlike open area's you guys have out West.
If I am too tall my cab is in the trees and breaking branches so I can't exactly tread lightly that way.
We have enough trail closures going on out here so I think I will stay my decision on 36's.

I'm in Vermont.  I could go as big as I wanted but it would limit me where I go to offroad.
I want to keep the truck somewhat low I'll be happy with just 36's for now.

Vermont!  I'm from there too, I totally understand what you mean about the brush, I thought I was the only one who thought that way.  A lot of places around here are tight and it doesn't always pay to be huge.

Damn you have a first gen on 36's?  You can do that with 2" of lift and NO rubbing.  I put 35's on with 1" suspension and 3/4" body lift.  NO rubbing at all.  Hell I put 38's on my 90 with 3" of lift.  It is extremely dooable and you dont have to hack like you'd think either.

:twocents: I can't say that 36's are not better than 33's; however, I can tell you that my 33's have not stopped me from getting anywhere that I wanted to go.  Admittedly, I don't go "extreme" wheeling.  I have done Pritchett Canyon in Moab without assist (I did go around the rock pile because there was no pile).  I have done most of the normal Big names in Moab, with the exception of Behind the Rocks, but I have not done trails like Upper Helldorado or the Proving Grounds.  Having a super built truck is great, but it would be painful to drive my truck from Washington State to Moab with 36's.  I am also starting the think that at some point a truck can be so built that it takes the challenge out of 95% of the trails.  Once you get a truck build so well that any one of the three stooges could drive it anywhere with ease, what's the point and where's the challenge?  Don't get me wrong, I drool over the super trucks like everyone else, but you just have to choose the level of difficulty of trails you want to run and how easy you want it to be.  If you are almost always running super difficult trials, go for the 36's, they will help a ton if you have the gearing to support it.  :driving:

Pics of my budbuilt crossmember:
As you can see it's missing some bolts but I will get them installed sometime.
I think start to finish this took me and my buddy about 20 mins to install.
