22RE to Carb?
« on: Aug 29, 2013, 11:51:27 AM »
Can you use a complete 22RE and make it a carb'd engine essentially making it a 22R?

My 22R has kicked the bucket after 386,000 miles and I happen to have a 22RE that is in good shape, but none of the wiring or the ECU. Since my truck is my daily driver and I need to get it on the road ASAP, I was trying to find the best way to do that with what I have available.

Thats reasonable. I cant stand the guys that want to carb there efi trucks because ''its easier''. Go ahead and bolt up the intake, carb, ect. from your 22r onto the re and your good to go. but id suggest holding on to the efi parts and keeping an eye out for the rest of the  parts you need to do the swap. do the research and when the time  is right go efi.

What year are the two engines?

There's pre 85 and 85+.    The block and head changed.     If they're both either pre or post you shouldn't have any problems.    One pre and one post might have problems............

I have the complete wiring harness for a 22 RE if your interested. I am in Kentucky. You may not want it now but it would be a good swap for later. I am going for a 3rz so I don't need it anymore.

what you ever do with this?
After alot of research, I discovered that I had a post 85 22re and it wouldn't work with my pre 85 22r components. Lucky for me, I had a guy that brought in a 95 Tacoma with a 2RZ that was having compression issues. He wanted a new motor put in instead of rebuilding the one he had. We cut a deal, and I got the old 2RZ off of him for half of the cost of doing the swap for him. I haven't been able to complete the swap into my truck as of yet, but I am currently getting the rest of the parts to finish the swap. Luckily, the motor only needed a set of rings and it was good to go!
