« on: Mar 15, 2005, 08:06:38 AM »
I am rebuilding a Engine for a 85 totota 22re   I an curious if anyone has pros and cons about the Dual row timing chain versus the standard one Lc engineering has a kit for 399.00 . Which year if any had a stock dual row chain? Also looking for recommendations  for a Machine shop Fresno area for Head and Block rebuild .Thanks Lynn

Pros of a double roller: Will outlast a single roller more than 2:1.

Cons of a double rooler: heavier rotating mass.

I'm not sure about the year, Gotta wait for Marlin, Glen, or Kyle to get in here, they should know, but I think its only 79-80 20Rs, and then some other later models ?

About a machine shop, try Clovis Machine in downtown Clovis. Call them up and ask for Andy. Tell him BigMike from Marlin Crawler sent ya

The double row chains came on all 20r's and early 22R's ( 81 to late 82 or early 83). They are definatley better , but the only way to put one on your '85 22re is to buy the kit from LC Eng. From my experience with the single row chains , the problem is with the guides not the chain itself. Single rows came with plastic guides that are notorius for breaking , where the duoble rows had metal backed guides.

If it where mine I'd save my $$ and just keep the single row and buy a set of metal backed guides for the single row. I think you can buy them from engnbldr.com . On the other hand if you just have $400 to blow then the LC kit would be great , but I'm just a poor machinist from Alabama so I have to be a tight wad. My  :twocents:

1st we need to determin if you have the laser block or regular/early block,  oh wait you said RE  :smack:
yes all 20R's and 22R's  80-82 had double row,    you can get a 20R chain kit and take 1 link out , ive not done that but im positive thats all LCEng does :headscratch:  but like bluetoy said the guides are the problem,   if you go dual chain you need the timing cover from a 84 or older 22R or from a 20 and have it cut down

but i think running the stock chain and metal guides is probably best for the laser block
and :pokinit: loads cheaper

Finally decided to go to LCEngineering  Ordered new head larger stainless valves their EFI Camshaft and the double row timing Chain Kit
There goes a quick $ 1400.00  Now I just need to get the block checked and bored if necessary and the crank turned.
