86 4runner Sr5 22re 5 speed stock failed cali smog fresh oil change guaranteed to pass stuff and air filter

I have a #5 stored code im guessing o2 sensor since the truck came from a no smog area and im sure none of that has been replaced. The truck seemed to run fine thats why i took it in but smog tech said my timing was at 15 and that was it. I am going to be doing plugs cap, rotor, clean egr, valve adjustment, fix the timing. any help would be appreciated if you think i should add something else. Just a broke Airman so dont have alot of money to be throwing around.

My guess is that cat is original, the guy i bought it from didnt mention to much he only towed it behind a motor home. had to replace the timing chain gasket because it was puking oil but it looked like someone was working on it before. Im thinking of getting an LC engineering cat any thoughts on their cats?

Timing needs to be 5 degrees +- 3

I get best results at 2.5 - 3 degrees BTDC

High NOX can sometimes be fixed by adding backpressure.    I add a plate after the cat to do this.

Yes, it's just sheet metal.

Installed after the cat  (only during smog tests)

With the timing that far off, it would be hard to say what the cause is.  Do the tune-up, maybe pull the cat to see what it looks like(should be able to see blurry light through the other end), then do another pretest to get an idea of where it is at at stock settings.

$300 for an LC engineering cat isn't worth the money, just buy one from a local auto parts store.

You mentioned that you think the cat is original.

How many miles on the truck?

So I think a new cat will solve the problem

Also note the 2009 measurements were with the backpressure gasket in place

Could be the cat, your HC's are on the high side.  Have you checked for intake/exhaust leaks?

those $100 cats aren't CA smog legal...... they are 49 state, except CA legal..... they have a note on them that says not for sale or use in ca on a pollution controlled vehicle

I thought the CA versions were closer to $150.

I saw a universal no-name brand at rockauto for just over $100 that was CA legal...........
