That dang clunkity clunk..
« on: Feb 13, 2013, 07:35:56 PM »
I have a 81 4x4, I just installed my highsteer. Everything seems great except when I have it in 4-low and even a little bit in 4-high on the pavement, something from the passenger side front end clunks when I Make a slight turn. It does it a lot more in 4 low and is a lot more noticeable than 4 high. Now when I have 4wd engaged off road I don't notice this at all? Any ideas? Is it just because im on the pavement its doing this? I'm kind of thinking I didn't get the right pre load on my knuckles when I installed the steering arms...
** Oh and it doesn't make the clunk when im going straight**

Birfields?? Any way to check that off without ripping into them?

Maybe I should have headlined this "Just got one of them there yoters, gunna lift it 12 inches with 40s, will the stock gears/ steering be ok?" for a quicker response.. :gap:

It's most likely your springs popping as you turn, mine used to do it. They stopped just recently.

Yup it's your leaf springs poping a bit side to side as you turn.  If you tighten u-bolts it might be less but it's kind of one of the things that go along with flexy springs and hi-steer.

1. You are not supposed to have it in 4wd on dry pavement, especally if you have non-selectable locker, dry pavement - 4wd - bad JuJu!

2. Tighten the center bolts in your springs.

mine does the same thing and it is in fact my leaf spring shifting from side to side. i thought it was something in my axle at first also lol. my only question is why does it do it more so on the passenger side? maybe it has something to do with the steering pressure on that side where both links mount?

So in summary, the danged clunkity clunk is a common side effect of a good flexy leaf spring front suspension...

Haha good to know. Ripping into the front end this weekend, new B.Longs (rip) and a Marlin complete rebuild kit.... smooth.

Make sure you clearence those longs if need be. I learned the bard way after i put my axle back together and heard a wonderful high pitch squeal sound on a test run.
