1980 SR5 pickup build (Project Rust Bucket)
« on: Feb 13, 2013, 06:19:04 AM »
Well I am finally back on the forum, after years of being idle. Living in a whole nother' state now and finally decided to get another toy, after having to sell my previous first gen during the move. I found an 80 pickup, its the SR5 with sunroof, buckets, fancy dash. $300 drove it home, barely made it, but what do you expect for $300 right? Anyways the interior is filthy, full of trash, reeks like cigarettes. Body is, well, very rusty. Pretty much hammered. Has the 4 speed, not sure which one yet, going to get my first chance at working on it tonight. Not sure if it has power steering, if it does, its not working I can tell you that.  The transfer case lever isnt working right, 4WD light on dash stays on, cant get lever to neutral position. Engine is dumping oil all over my shop floor. Trans is so sloppy its a total guess which gear your going for. And the list goes on.

Plans: Return to original condition as much as possible. Frame off, clean everything up, paint & body work, interior, mild suspension mods. Maybe custom flatbed or fiberglass bed. As much new sheetmetal as possible or good used stuff. Find L52 trans overhaul and install. Rebuild Tcase. Rebuild 20R. Power steering swap. Maybe some 31" or 32" tires. Nothing crazy by any means, I am going to DD this truck!

Will post pics tonight when I get off work and get out in the shop.  :beerchug:

Well it is factory no A/C or power steering. The trans is an L43 so that sucks. The birfield wiper seals are dumping oil, and it looks like most the engine oil is coming from the valve cover. Going to steam her off this weekend real good and see if I can get the engine to run correctly. So tonight all I did was clean the cab, pretty nasty in there.

Rust sucks! Maybe this project will make me into an average body man? I can fix anything mechanical but we will see as far as body panel replacement/alignment and repair. Found a donor engine/5spd/tcase from an 82 for cheap. Might go pick it up Sunday.

Can someone confirm this is a short bed? It's 6FT long? The long box is 7FT if I remember correctly?
