Spartan locker into Toyota diff with 4.88's
« on: Jan 18, 2013, 02:57:27 PM »
Im getting ready to do this install and was wondering if anyone had clearance issues removing or installing the cross pin shaft.  The instructions mention possibly having to remove the bearing cap to get that pin out--kinda makes me nervous doing that because i don't have a tool to check backlash.  Any idea where I can get one for a reasonable price if needed?

See below-quoted from intall instructions:

Carrier removal
If you are running a low ratio ring & pinion set, such as a 4.88 or 5.13, you may find that your ring gear is too thick to allow for removal of the cross pin shaft. If this is the case, please take the following steps:

Using a punch, mark one of the bearing caps so you can remember which side it belongs to. Bearing caps are specific to each side of the housing. This is very important for re-assembly.
Check your backlash with a dial indicator and make note of it. You will need to check it again later after re-assembly to make sure everything went back together properly
Remove your bearing caps, and pull out your carrier. Some designs have shims outside the races. You must keep track of which side you removed the shims from; they must be returned to the same sides they were removed from. This is also true for the carrier races
Remove your ring gear from the carrier

I have heard that you can install these into a Toyota without removing the ring gear.  Is this true?

You will need to get you backlash back to spec.  If you have alot of experience you can almost feel what's right, but it would be best to go pick up a cheap dial indicator with a magnetic base. They can be had at any cheap tool store...

X2, I've done enough I can go by feel, but dial Indicators are cheap and easy to use.
