what Subaru engine does every one use
« on: Jan 16, 2013, 06:36:16 PM »
Was talking to Toyota engine guy about up grading to a v8 in my Toyota and he said to go with a Subaru  engine because it lighter and better on gas.          What is the best car to pull engine from on smaller budget?

WaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaTF is that guy smoking........  um i dont even think a subaru engine would fit in a toyota pu (should never say that actually).. its pretty wide and low........   but if you think you can do it... go with either a 2.2, 2.5 opposed 4cyl.. or the 3.0 6 cylinder....

turbo either.... post up pic's

......... subaru, really, not supra....  :screwy: :headscratch: :dunno:  :hammer:

Rocksurfer, did you do the Marlin vertical conversion?  The one that puts the engine vertical so that it fits and the bellhousing bolts line up...

I'd do a vw motor way before a subaru motor. It'd be way simpler. Only way I'd ever consider a subaru motor would be in a transaxle buggy.

better on gas

I'm not sure economical is a trait of a boxer engine. I know the AWD kills the efficiency, but I'm basing this on the "alleged" lightweight Toyota FT-86 coupe of 27-30 MPG. I've heard from friends that in AWD car platforms you'll lucky to make 25 MPG.

Keep in mind car engines are not designed for use in heavier vehicles with oversized tires. For instance, my 1.6-liter 4A-GZE gets 31 MPG in my MR2 and develops almost more peak torque than my 2.7-liter 3RZ-FE. Yet despite having nearly the same peak torque, I bet it'd only make 10-15 MPG in the Hilux because it would be operating at its limit nearly all the time due to its narrow powerband.

Regards,
BigMike

I would not want the motor out of my WRX in my truck.

Not enough off-idle torque, then it all comes on in a big rush right around 3000 RPM.

Freeway mileage in the WRX is about 25-27 if I put the cruise control right at 70.  Any faster than that and it drops off quick.  A truck is a lot less aerodynamic and big wheels/tires have a lot more rotational inertia so the mileage would probably be considerably worse.

I'd much rather have a large, torquey V6 or V8 with plenty of low RPM oomph.  A GM 3800 V6 seems like it would be a good choice.  Anyone ever used one of those?
