Morning milkshake
« on: Dec 04, 2012, 09:49:33 AM »
Finally tore into an axle I'm going to be rebuilding and it had some great things brewing inside. Thought I'd share since there's plenty of milkshake to go around  :moods:

Make sure you put extended breather lines when you rebuild it

Definitely! The axle was a cheap craigslist find a few years back and I'm finally getting around to giving it some attention. I don't think this axle has ever been serviced from the looks of things. The axle tubes were coated with about an inch thick of sludge. It cleaned up pretty nice though...

Save it, send it to Wenhar, he can resell it as Goop.  :disturbed:

When I cracked it open and saw the mess, that was the first thing that came to mind!  :gap:

That cleaned up good, to the point it looks new.  The one I got, has a serious case of rust.  To the point, that I'm thinking I want to just scrap it, and find another housing.

I really wasn't expecting it to clean up so well, but glad it did. The goop saved it!

It makes a huge difference if the PO didn't tear the axle apart, and leave it out in the weather.  Oh, and he lived right on the bay.

Yeah, that would make a big difference. If the rust isn't too bad, you can probably try using a rust converter?

In the before picture above, I had that axle sitting in a field for about 4 years. It has seen its share of snow, rain, and sun. I feel for anybody that has to deal with severe rust!... I would rather wait in line at the DMV than deal with rusty nuts and bolts.

This what I looked like when I got it home, and this is how it came out of the brush.

They want gold for axles around these parts.  I have lots of connections in Cali with axles for almost cheap, but it would cost me more than the axles worth to ship, and the wife won't let me put it in the van when we are down that way.  Next time I'm down, I probably will be draggin one home.   :wink2:
I see people parting out first gens locally, and they want $500 for both axles, and they won't separate.  And that's for up to a 83, if they have an 84 or especially an 85, they want $400+.

Won't let you put it in the van...... put a blanket on the roof to pad it, and strap it down

Ouch.... $500?! Spend a tad more, and you can get a ruffstuff housing! I agree... Throw that bad boy on the roof. Even better, have her help you load it on the roof and she'll probably change her mind about having it inside.

I've thought about building a plywood box that attaches to the roof rack and haul them back that way.  So, I won't have to worry about the dents and scratches in the roof.   I just got to have room for my booze too!
