Transmision problem
« on: Nov 13, 2012, 01:02:28 PM »
Truck is a 1993 v6 4wd
When the truck is in neutral, you can't freely spin the drive shaft like you should be able to, it takes alot of force using a pry bar to get it to spin. Still drives ok, no grinding noise, but I'm worried it's going out soon? Any Ideas?

Sorry for the lack of info
No 4wd hooked up, it's a desert truck
With the rear drive shaft detached from the rear end, truck in neutral, you can't turn the drive shaft by hand, you have to use a prybar and force it to turn. It is not the normal drag that you would feel, I am not a newbie haha
If you depress the clutch it spins normally, also has the same symptom if you put the transfer case in neutral.
Also when the truck is running in neutral and you let the clutch out, you here the rpms drop a little and the truck almost wants to go forward

If your trans is attached to the engine block it should not be easy to spin. If it did then you should be concerned.

To address your other issue I recommend draining your fluids (both Tcase and trans) check for metallic sludge and/or excessive metal chips/flakes on drain plug. I would also consider replacing your release bearing if your RPM's drop when you let out your clutch. Keeping in consideration that it is a desert rig it's possible you have excessive sand/dirt build up in you bell housing.
P.s. replace your seals and make other upgrades and repairs while you have the trans off ;)

From your second post it sounds like you have removed the front ds so if you have it in neutral and the rear either disconnected or the rear tires off the ground you should be able to turn the rear ds with your hands. Sounds like something is wrong inside, don't know what it may be but it should be looked into. Could even lock up which if you were driving it may not end well for you. In neutral the fact that it is attached to a motor is not a factor and if there is still a tcase that would not be a factor either.
