Ruff Stuff axle housings
« on: Nov 04, 2012, 03:58:33 PM »
Looking for some info on Ruff Stuff axle housings.  I cannot find anywhere on their site where it says they come with knuckle balls installed or not, just that they are 65" can can be cut down.  That kinda leads me to believe that they don't come with knuckle balls.

Anyway, they look like sweet axles, and I have found a few posts with people saying they have them, but no more than that.  Do you have one, do you like it?  Seems like it might be a good deal considering it's at least $900 for a diamond, and only $600 for a RuffStuff.

TIA
PZ

I have both a front and rear Ruff Stuff housings, which respectively accept an 8" and a 9.5" diff just like the stock FZJ80s do.  They do not come with knuckles or FF spindles, but I am local so I dropped off front and rear bare, donor FZJ80 housings at their shop in Loomis; they charged me a reasonable amount of money to have the FF rear spindles and knuckle balls machined and then burnt into their housings.  Be absolutely explicit how you want your caster/pinion angles and for the FF rear be exact about how you want the ears for the brakes so you get your e-brake line just right of you need it like I did.  All in all, I am happy.  Had some issues eventhough perfect specs were provided explicitly, but all was take care of and made right in the end.  Also, no leaks through the welds.

I'd just go with the Diamond, it comes complete with the hardware and knuckle balls welded at the correct angles. Not to mention that most people when they install their own knuckle balls grind down the part that goes into the tube when they should be pressed in like the factory does. Its not by chance the factory does this, it is one key part to insuring your brand new axle stays in one peace. And taking the chance of installing your balls at different caster angles would be really crappy after spending all that money. Diamond can insure its done correct the first time.
