Best tire for DD and wheeling?
« on: Aug 06, 2012, 02:00:07 PM »
I'm looking at tires right now i have 4.88 gears its a dd as well as my crawler. What are people running and liking? Looking for good length on street but not giving up to much performance on the trail.

This question gets asked allot, and in the end the BFG AT always wins.  It works decent offroad, has plenty of sipping for the snow and ice and does indeed seem to last forever.  I have them on the 82 and as long as you rotate them they will last a long long time.

I have heard the mtr does very well if you don't want to run an all terrain. I had the km1 tires and they lasted a long time i don't know if someone can come pair the two tires for road wear...

Km2s are good but suck for winter driving. I run the cooler discovery stt and they are great, no complaints to be had

I don't personally have a set, but I've been hearing nothing but great things about the Wrangler Dura Tracs.  The guys on the oil fields are using them instead of the BFG ATs cause they cup less.  This is just what I've been hearing.

I think for 31's i would run either the bfg a/t or the goodyear duratracs i have been hearing alot of good things. I hear both the a/t and duratracs are really good in the snow and my dad has a/t's on his tacoma and they were pretty good in the snow so far. I think if i ran 35's it would be the a/t or the new mtr cause it would also be my DD. Just my  :twocents:

Goodyear Duratracs. They kick the crud out of the BFG A/Ts I had on before these. Night and day difference offroad and the Duratracs are way WAY better during winter. They are on my used-to-be DD:

The biggest duratrac you can get in a 15" rim is a 33x12.5

Once you get bigger than 33s you generally buy different wheels anyways, so why not go to 16s or even 17s? Then you can get the metric equivalent of 35 inch duratracs. My 33s are on stock wheels, but they really need to be on some wider aftermarket wheels with less backspacing.

id stay with 15s going 16 or 17 means more  :twocents: and the load range would be different.

If someone wants to make it work, they will. I am stating that one can run 35 inch duratracs if willing to move up a wheel size. Saving an extra couple hundred bucks isn't a huge deal. If someone is trying to save money, wheeling is not the right sport.

Higher load range tires are generally built stronger, which I would consider a plus for wheeling. Just run less pressure if the contact patch and/or ride is not desirable for one's own use.

This should be a quote.

Back to the topic.  I would not run bigger then a 33 for a DD anyway.  Not even with a 5.29 geared 22re with no heavy exo cage.  The power loss due to the tire weight alone sucks.

Prob catch flak from the uneducated yuppies, but I say run retreads. Treadwright.com  . The guard dog is an exact copy of the mtr, way cheap, and get GREAT reviews on all the wheeling sites. Pirate, ttora, Ih8mud, and even here on marlin.

You can get em all the way from a 31 to a 37 if you got the right rims. You can get stuff added to them to improve life or offroad handling.

You can call them, and specify the casing you want, even get old mtr casings if they have them in stock.

Wheeling is one of the cheapest backyard hobbies I know of. Myself, and many others have built pretty nice rigs, for pennies on the dollar. Thats why I thought we all drove toyotas? Because it DOESNT take money to make one capable or a reliable nice dd, like the bolt on money hungry jeepers

You are absolutely correct. Toyota wheeling is way cheaper. Had a Jeep, and would have to put buckets of cash into it to make it work as good as a mildly built Toyota
87 money pit....

if it's a daily driver I'd keep the size between 31" and 33". I like the Trxus super swampers tsl's they are insanely good in mud, great on rock, and they're still driveable on "Dry land" my neighbor has them on his FJ60 and I've been trying to get him to sell them to me for my pickup. anything above 35 for a daily driver is too big. unless you're like me and don't care because it's worth it :]
May Bobby Long be forever immortalized in his work and deeds to the Toyota 4x4 community. Because of a select few including this wonderful man, none of us have to drive Jeeps. He will be missed.

35s are fine for DD as long as you have  proper gears. My 4Runner gets 21-25 mpg with 35s and 5.29s.  The 3RZ no doubt helps but I was running 35s for a DD before.
