1975 pre-smog build
« on: Jul 25, 2012, 05:39:03 PM »
This last weekend i got my hands on a 1975 2wd Hilux. It has no motor or tranny. Should i build it on a 2wd frame or can the body mount to an 79-85 4wd frame? I know that i want to run propane and it is a pre-smog here in good ol cali so my options are endless right now. Should i go 20r,22r or a 20r/22r hybrid or find a 22re for a turbo propane engine? For axles i dont know yet i would really want a set of FZJ80 axles but mounting up the rear would be hard since its an offset diff but i love that 63inch width. 2nd thought was a set of FJ60 axles or just stick with the mini truck axles? I will be running triple case's with hopefully 38 or 39.5 inch tires. Any thought's would be cool. thanxs :turtle:

pre smog, you can do what ever motor you want! i personally wouldnt stick with a 22r or re if smog wasnt an issue anymore

For a motor I would say 22r. With a pane setup there is only a few wires you have to run, super simple. Axle wise do whatever you can find cheap. I think a fj60 front with ifs hubs would be around 61" wide. Mini truck stuff is cheap and plentiful though.

do an engine you will be happy with for a looong time, swapping sucks. the offset on the fj80 isn't enough to matter. use a 4wd frame, anything will fit if you make it. i would personally build a new one from scratch if your serious.  check out my build in my signature.

Looks like it's going to be a fun truck to build.
