Dusy Ershim open 2012
« on: Jul 17, 2012, 11:31:19 AM »
I just called the Prather Ranger Station and was told Dusy-Ershim is open. (559)855-5360

She said they wont change their website until Aug 1st because that's the official opening date.

We went in last weekend and cleared the trail. There were 84 trees between White Bark Vista and Voyager Rock Campground. 70 of those were between Parking Lot in the Sky and Ershim Campground,5 in the campground itself. There's still work to be done in the campground and a crew will go in this weekend to handle that. North of Lakecamp Lake there's a stretch we are now calling Tornado Alley. The whole landscape has changed with many large trees down all over. Both of the old toilets at Ershim Campground were removed also.

Sounds like the trail is already open. When you get to ershim lake and see a bunch of people working feel free to help.

Crew leader asks that if you are going in this weekend please stay away from the work area, those working on the project have been trained by the forest service and are covered under Forest Service insurance.

Thanks.

I recommend at least a rear locker and also a Crawl ratio of at least 76:1.

i wouldnt say that thompson hill and the gate keeper by white barks are no jokes and thats where you'll see that some people are making their own routes.
plus there is a little area by lake camp and thats where i see lots of break downs.

i had to pull a guy out by thompson because he was trying to hop over rocks and broke a rear shaft. even thou with one locker your pushing your lucks.  ive try rear lock with ultimate crawler at thompson and its still hopping.

I'd say Dusy is more difficult based solely on but a few sections of the trail, namely Thomson Hill and White Bark. The gatekeeper at the bottom of Chicken Rock on Dusy used to be muuuuuch more challenging but they removed many of the rocks to make it easier.

The one thing that Swamp is......is RELENTLESS. I've only done it once and in the north-to-south direction, the first half in the dark and the second half in daylight. Just imagine driving over volleyball sized rocks, all spaced about a foot apart, continuous for 10 hours and you'll have an idea of what Swamp is like. At least in my truck, whenever you want to pick up speed to get from point A to point B all you do is get bashed over and over by the trail. It therefore feels like it takes all eternity to finish the trail.

I'd wheel Dusy ANYTIME no questions asked instead of Swamp. Just my opinion! :twocents:

Yes, that is a nice spot! Heading south-east from Lakecamp arranges that section for a nice uphill climb. And you are right about people making their own routes as I've helped the forest service lay down logs and tree branches in this same spot to block off user created bypasses :nonono:

You know there used to be a connecting ohv trail between Swamp Lake and East Lake on the Dusy, but its since been closed to only foot traffic (many years ago). It would be neat to have an access point / connecting routes like that... But on the other hand it's nice to have Dusy as a long, committed, one-way-in one-way-out expedition style trail to keep all the yahoos out! :yesnod:

I love ershim. Swamp is also a lot of fun. Just wait until you guys see all of the trees that fell this year. It took us two days just to clean up the camp ground at ershim lake. And I agree about the gate keeper. I think that is some of the best wheeling around.

and forgot to mention last year we had a close call by lake camp but thanks to our brand new portable welder one of our own made it out without having to be rescued.

Maybe I'm wrong, looking at the map Coyote is much closer to East and also Ershim lakes. For some reason I've got a connecting trail from Swamp to Dusy stuck in my mind :hammerhead:
