Preparing an old 85 for long trip
« on: Jun 12, 2012, 06:32:30 PM »
In a month im making trip to Rausch Creek offroad Park in PA.  Im gonna be driving my 85 Runner there wheeling it and driving back, well hopefully lol.  Just wondering what extra parts i should gather before the trip and any special preparations i should make?  I have extra tie rod ends, one berfield joint, and extra fluids so far.  i only have a small trailer and i will be trailering my offroad tires and rims and running some all terrains for the road trip there.  Just trying to be prepared for the worst.   I also invested in AAA plus

If you have a stock rear driveshaft I would consider getting a spare, or build an off road use shaft out of schedule 80 pipe and swap it out  when you are wheeling.   Stock Toyota shafts will twist up like pretzel if you put the slightest dent or ding in it from a rock.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

I would pick one set of tires that work well with whatever gearing you have, probably some light mud terrains as they will work well all around.  Pulling a trailor with a 4 banger across the counrty is not something I would like to do.

I have done the to big of swampers on the weekend and small all terrains for DD thing and these things always wheel better all around with a good set of all around tires that go with your gearing anyway.  If I were in your shoes that's what I would do.

Other than that, a good tune up, grease everything well and change your fluids all around.  The spare rear driveshaft was god advice too...  Take a wireing repair kit, a spare thermostat and some spare u-joints.  It's always the stupid little stuff that bites you on a road trip.

Have a fun trip, sounds awesome.  You had better post some pics up here as you go.
