1uz FJ40-build coming soon
« on: Apr 04, 2012, 10:41:08 AM »
I just dont want to do the typical 350 or 5.3.

I purchased a FJ40 a while back because im just tired of destroying pickups in the woods.  i figured with the 40 i could strengthen the body in key areas(budbuilts corners and metal tech fenders, and cage) and have a capable toy that laughs off rubbing trees and roots and junk on the trail.

ive started with an all Toy frame of mind.  FJ60 power steering with FJ80 box.  FJ60 front axle widened with a sleeve and ifs hubs, front range brakes, mini high steer and longs.  FZJ80 rear axle Full Floater non elocker stock. i chose the FJ60 front axle for matching 3rds front and rear even though the 80 front has larger biffs.  eventually i will swap in a ruffstuff 9.5 with 80 birfs.  ill be running 37" Pitbull Rockers off my pickup.

Id like to stay all toy on the motor but i want to swap out the heavy 2F.  it has its advantages but i will be driving this as much as possible and want something a little more modern under the hood.  ive read and searched and read some more but no one has really done what i want to do.

would it just be dumb to lose two cylinders and go down to a 3rz in my 40. my budget is not unlimited, but i have enough saved to consider all options.  3rz, 1uz, and lastly a 5.3.  ive kind of ruled out the 5vz it just doesnt seem to get good reviews once the swap has been done.  id like to carry over my W56 and dual cases from my pickup.  or auto to duals would be sweet.   im open to all options at this point.

My fairly stock 40:

I'd vote for a 1 or 2UZ if you want all Toyota. Otherwise I'd go 4.8 or 5.3 GM. 4.8s tend to be a bit cheaper than the 5.3 and a lot of times easier to find because everyone wants the bigger motor. I believe it is rated at only 10 or 15 HP less than the 5.3

Slolyfe i have thought about it. i would have to at least go tbi, use a toybox adapter, ditch the stock transfer, and just run dual cases behind the stock 4 spd.  my 2F is quiet and only has around 140K.  the only thing swaying me from keeping it is high rebuild costs, when the time comes, and on a typical wheeling day i will drive 3+ hrs each way and i dont know if the 2F will enjoy sustained highway speeds with 37s(4.88s).

im considering the 3rz because the few FJ40 builds ive seen with 22re's, their final weight was around 3200 pounds on 37s.  thats what my first gen weights so i dont see why a 3rz wouldnt motivate a 40.  it would be nice to have the option to turbo later on.

i have a line on a 5.3 for a song so im just trying to weigh other options before i commit to going GM.

well it looks like i can get a 1uz cheaper than any of the other motors.  i called a local junkyard that i deal with and they have a complete swap for $500.  i dont know why i didnt look for one of those sooner.  THANKS FREDS40!

What are you going to use for a trans if you go the 1uz route?  I wonder if anyone makes a adapter to bolt the 1UZ up to your stock 4 speed trans?

Inchworm's pre-runner adapter will work with the stock auto from behind the 1UZ to get a mini case in there. Don't think theres a direct adapter from the auto to the Cruiser case.

Either way with the auto it will be a long drivetrain for a 40

I will use an adapter to run my W56 and dual cases behind the 1uz.  i have a few lying around i can go through until i can afford a W58.  I purchased a 92 sc400 motor today, should be here monday.  i will use megasquirt in place of the factory ecu.  the flywheel is a little tricky apparently but lc engineering has modified a 5vz wheel.  i wonder if Marlin can do the same.

once i put it all together and make sure it can fit in my FJ40, i have a patient buyer for my stock drivetrain, so i want to keep it intact.  it should pay for the majority of my swap.  the 1uz with wiring harness at 87,000 miles ended up being $300. there were a couple of newer vvti motors for around 5 but i didnt want to mess with the wiring. im figuring about $1000-1200 or so all said and done.  the 1uz makes 200+ ft lbs at 2000 rpms so its comparable to my factory 2F.  It should work out nicely.

Please keep us informed on this swap.  Start to finish with lots of pics.  I just finished a 3RZ swap into my '84 pickup and I am starting on my '71 FJ40 very soon.  The F motor is toast so a swap is in order.  All Toy is the direction I want to go as well.  2UZ is what I was planning, but 1UZ may fit the bill...

Im moving into a shop at the first of the month so soon my updates will become more frequent.  For now i am reading as much information as i can and deciding whether i want to stick with the stock ecu or try my hand at megasquirt. i still have the adapter to buy for the W series trans.  it comes with a T-56 hydraulic clutch and modified flywheel.

In the meantime i have an fj60 front i need to start cleaning up so i can add the widening sleeve.

80 series FF rear axle and 60 rear springs for the rear.

this axle has been cleaned of all brackets and is ready for perches.

i got a bunch of ruffstuff perches and brackets for the install.  im still going to leaf the rear but if i can afford it, i would like to link the front with ruffstuff's 3 link kit.  i am using an 80 series steering box.   Once i move into my shop in a couple weeks its game on.

Muddywaters, you won't be sorry fitting a 1UZ into your 40. Here in South Africa the 1UZ is a very very popular mod to do, and it works like a charm. I am currently building a FJ40 Hybrid with a 1UZ vvti mated to a H55f box. I used the bellhousing from the 2H diesel, and had a guy make me a flywheel that will take a 350 Chev pressureplate, so I will be able to use a larger OD clutch plate. Also had an adaptor plate made for the 2H bellhousing to fit to the 1UZ. On the other hand I have a Land Cruiser LJ71 Bundera fitted with a normal 1UZ and auto tranny. That vehicle with that 1UZ is really big fun to drive and puts a smile on my face everytime I drive it.

There are limited 5VZ-FE swaps done. I know only of 3. I've talked to one guy and he is on the project while I can't find details about the other. 1 was done my TLC for Toyota Corp and it seems good.
If you have information, could you provide details?
