Watching my dream truck slip away
« on: Jul 19, 2002, 08:39:55 AM »
Hey Everybody,
I've just started checking out the site and was hoping I could get some sage advice from everyone.  First, I'm not what you would call financially stable in terms of being able to drop a couple grand into my newly purchased 87 4Runner.  Having said that I was a bad boy and didn't look at the t-case oil before I bought and two months ago while going 65 on the highway the t-case locked up and ate itself and the transmission.  I took it to a mechanic who I (gasp!) found in the yellow pages and was quoted a repair cost of around $2400.  This covers "new" t-case, tranny, rebuild of the slave and master cylinders, and labor.  My dilemma now is whether I should keep the truck or get out while I can.  She has 214,000 miles and is in beautiful shape, and I mean beautiful.  I had her running long enough to form a major attachment.  I have limited shop facilities at best and as I said before I don't have a whole hell of a lot of maney to throw at this thing.
Any comments/support/criticism/free money are appreciated.

If you can do the work your self, we can get you a rebuilt T-case for $350 + core or take a chance on a core for $150( I can find a nice one for you). For the tranny it is $749+core.

You probably wont need the slave cylinders rebuilt in this also, if you do you can get them at pep boys or the like for a lot less than a mechanic would stiff for, they get them from the autoparts shop anyway.
