HJ60 axles on FJ40
« on: Mar 21, 2012, 07:28:20 AM »
What are the options to adopt '86 HJ60 axles to '74 FJ40.
Are they bolt-on to 40s driveshafts?
I know I have to modify the spring mounts to accept narrow frame on FJ40.

the driveshaft bolt pattern is different..

either outboard your springs or cut into the pumpkin and weld a perch in that spot to cover the hole for the front axle..  rear axle is easy. cut off old perches, weld on new ones.   ruffstuff specialties has good options to outboard as does proffits..  profitts is stupid expensive for what you get though.. steer away from them unless you like spending money..  ruffstuff will have some super heavy duty brackets..  there are a few other companies that offer options.. i just cant think of them off hand at the moment..

I have all necessary parts from RuffStuff regarding springs mounts.
I just found out that flanges are different. Bad find, considering that I recently rebuild the diffs for the 60-series axles. I don't want to mess with resetting them, so more likely I'll be drilling the old ones to accommodate the 40-series driveshafts.
BTW, is it easier and possible to swap the pinion side yoke from the 60s driveshaft to 40? Do they run different U-Joints?

did you use a solid pinion spacer or a crush sleeve when you set them up??  if it was a solid spacer i would swap flanges..  marlin makes a really nice multipattern flange that i used in the setup in my diffs..  they really open up your options as far as flange bolt pattern interchangability..    as far as swapping the yoke ends, i believe everything is interchangable.. just mark the position of your driveshafts before you pull them apart in case something doesnt work out and you have to put them back together again to keep your driveshafts in phase..  i believe at least later 40 and 60 series have the same ujoints...

I've done the swap and it works great. Additional width also gives a bit of stability on the highway.
