Yukon 488 pinion gear
« on: Mar 12, 2012, 09:37:11 AM »
Guys,

I noticed that there is a difference in the Yukon pinion gear and the old (unknown) pinion gear that came out of my differential.

On the Yukon, where the pinion shaft starts there is a ridge that is not on the old pinion gear.

What I would like to know is this: The pinion shim that came off the old pinion gear is 0.080". Do I deduct the size of the ridge on
the pinion gear from the 0.080" to go back to a default size to start doing the pinion shim setup, or do I add the 0.080" to the ridge?

I included a picture for clarity

Thank You

Danny

I think it's just the difference of the 4 cyl pinion head vs. the V6 pinion head. To be sure just check out Zuk's site.

Avery gear install is different.  Start fresh...

I checked out www.gearinstalls.com and read almost every install but there is nothing on it. Also I mailed www.gearinstalls.com about a month ago with the same question and got no reply yet. So I thought that maybe one of you guys would know ....

This ring and pinion set is for a 4 cyl.

Thanks Guys

Did you check out his information page or cheat sheet? His links have a ton of good info also.

These guys are right about starting fresh but, starting with the original shim USUALLY saves you some time.

Yes I did check out the cheat sheet, but nothing is said or shown about that extra ridge on the Yukon pinion gear anywhere on the site. Guess I'll just have to do with trial and error  :crossed:
