What he said.

I don't know a whole lot about them, but I know the 1993 and up went from a 4.0 3FE I6 to a 4.5 1FZ I6 (more power) and I believe that was also the first year they came with high pinion E-lockers front and rear.

Some not all, came with E lockers front and rear, and to clarify, only the front came with the hi pinion.
Slee off road makes a nice 6'' lift for the 80 series as individual parts or a complete kit with options for fully welded or DIY.
MAN A FRE has their kit as well.

Oops yeah I didn't make that very clear about low pinion in the rear. I figured the lockers were optional but wasn't sure.

i've got a 94 Fj80 as my DD and i love it. It has E lockers front and rear and it is pretty fun on the trail too. Haven't posted a thread on it but i love it. Super comfortable ride with plenty power. Only downside is the thing is a BEAST!!  just under 7k lbs!!!

The 91-92 have there bonus points too.  They have no airbags, can have the locked axles swapped in, and a toybox/H41/splitcase can be matted behind the 3FE.  On either the FJ-80 or FZJ-80 you can clear 33's on the stock suspension and 37's are a pretty easy fit with minimal lift and still have great articulation.  Also get use to going slow on the roads, these things are originally designed for 3rd world countries not 80 mph Interstates.

Also, if you want to do harder wheeling you'll probably want to swap tons under it. It is 7k on an 8" ring gear, or 9.5 rear. Get bigger tires lower gears and the power they have and your ring gears will hate you.

Im new to this forum im usually on mud, I have a locked 96 ive been trying to trade for a first gen. I love this thing she has 230k and runs like a top. Really cant beat it in it's stock form f/r lockers, center diff lock, full float rear, high pinion front, 4.11's, 4wheel disc. Toyota did these right especially 95-97.

Also it's not uncommon to get 350,000 miles out of the stock engine. Most of the guys on Mud will tell you to leave the engine alone until you hit 350K!!! i just hit 195K on mine, so i have a a ways to go :-)
