4runner window tint
« on: Dec 02, 2011, 05:05:57 PM »
Went to go get my windows tinted in my 86 4runner. They told me that if i tint the very rear windows that it will look like  :pokinit: because of the dot matrix(the dots in the glass). I always thought dot matrix left a textured feel on the inside of the glass. Mine is smooth.
My question is has anyone tinted the rear windows on there 1st gen runner and how did it turn out. Does the tint stick to the dots? Pictures would be appreciated.

Did the shop look at the window from the inside, or just the outside?  Could also be that they didn't want to have to work the curved glass.  Other than the curve, if the glass is smooth it should tint just like standard auto glass.

They don't care about the curve. They have done all my cars. Very good tint shop. And he just looked from the outside. He said it was dot matrix. And the tint doesn't stick to where the dots are. Seems like I have seen some 4runners with tinted windows around so im not sure

Mine is tinted pretty dark from the factory.

My 86 was tinted on every piece of glass except the fronts and the  windshield.

there is a dot matrix on the small rear glass on the sides. I used that lense tint paint on those since you cant really see out of them anyways.  it came out pretty good.  i still need to do the sliders on mine.

The tint shop was wrong the dots are in the glass on the rear curved windows. Not dot matrix. Had them tinted last week. Will post some pics up today. Turned out great.

FWIW in case anyone else searches this topic, here's the trick to getting the film to stick and not have it pull loose leaving an unfinished, whitish looking area: http://www.tintdude.com/matrix-glue.html

Used to use it all the time on Camaro's.

Just make sure they are using 3M and it won't crack, bubble, fade or yellow.
