Toy/d60 vs 609 hybrid axle
« on: Nov 26, 2011, 01:46:07 PM »
What's everyone opinion on this? Obviously ford 9" is stronger and has just about every gear ratio you can think of. Also on the ford 9" you can run front and rear hi-pinion too. Not sure what size tire I'm gonna run but want to stay around 35-37 range.

I would not recomend running a high 9 in the rear.  Just get a new center section for a D60 and put new axle tubes with gm 14 bolt outers in it.  It makes it really easy to convert the rear to disc brakes.  If this is for the front a High 60 9 would be a really good setup.

Why would you not recommend running 9"HP in the rear?

Personally, if I had the doe, I'd run 9"HP front with D60 Cs and 9"HP full float rear. Just like the RockJock axles.

Jrock that's the exact setup I'm wanting to run. I also might be running axletech portals. I think just doing ford center is the way to go.

HP in rear runs on the coast side of the gear BUT lp fronts are the same thing and people run the heck out of them!
Sand, what fun, drop pressure to 12psi, stock tires are still digging, can't afford to get stuck, 8psi, still not working. Find a place to GET OUT, air up, un-lock hubs,  WAIT whats this, hubs are UN-LOCKED already. 2wd, 8psi, stock tires, Oregon sand dunes.

Ya I dont like hi pinions in the rear either, but the True Hi 9 was built for just that. So the Currie Hi9 is a bad choice for the rear the True Hi9 isn't. At least not with light weight rig.

Last year my bro and I built up this FJ40 and really went through all the options with rear axles and ended up deciding the HPD60 in the rear was by far the better way to go.  Yes the True High 9 is meant for rear axle applications but the D60 was by far the better choice.  Page 2 post 24 starts the dilemma and then picks up again around post 65 I think.  The HPD60 complete was only 3500.00.  Money well spent.  I don't know a whole lot of people who use their front diff as a commuter at highway speeds it wouldn't last too terribly long if they did as compared to the rear axle.  Currie explained this situation in extreme detail
