22r block ?
« on: Oct 26, 2011, 05:45:22 PM »
I have an 82 22r and just bought an 87 4runner with a bad motor. Will the 22r block work with the 22re head or is there any way to put the efi on the 22r head?

I might be wrong but I think the only difference in the blocks is timeing chain tensioner

The 22re head wont work. The early 22r's were short block with a tall head and the late were tall block with a short head. You will have one helluva time trying to get a timing chain to fit. You can machine the newer RE head to fit but I believe that is almost a 1/4 inch of material.

Well it looks like I'm going to be rebuilding the 22re so my next question is where should I get a rebuild kit from and a good cam?

D&J Rock is one of the best kits out there.  most machine shops can order from them and if your having machine work done you can usually order through them cheaper than anywhere else.

for a cam I would suggest http://www.toyotacatalog.net/M1WebGear/ProductDetails.aspx?PartUniqueID=2B3BCB39-57B7-4E3B-9C29-71F773B35A7B

really?  because I just rebuilt the engine in my daughters 4runner about 2 months ago and the rock kit came with clevite bearings.  it said rock on the box but had clevite stamped in the bearing.

mine were in a ROCK box and when I removed them to replace they were stamped TDC on the back.... Chinese :pokinit: I had another spare set of ROCK bearings which actually had ROCK stamped on them and had no more bearing issues. Another buddy ran the same ones and got a knock after 5000 miles. replaced with Clevites and no more issues.... I will only run Clevite engine bearings

i piece all my rebuilds together now. factory toyota gaskets/oil pump/waterpump, clevite bearings, ARP studs, LCE pistons/rings/timing sets and adjustable gears. I like ROCKs head setup and then throw in a set of LCE dual valve springs and cam......
