If you ask me..I like to keep everything TOYOTA as possible!!!But also depending on how big of a tire you want to run. But Toyota with longs and 40dee is good enough for me!!

My thoughts are Stick with toy axles, If I had a money tree I would have diamond axlels front and rear, custom made a little wider then the toy axle and ofcourse longs and high pinion front. one good thing about full size or 1ton axles is how much they weigh and will probably keep the rubber side down easier then toy axles.

Stock for stock a toyota axle is stronger then a 44. Depends on what size tires you want to run 39s and lower I would just build toyota axles. You need 42s at least to have 1 tons and clear stuff you could with 35s on a toyota axle.

toy,
like, its toyota!, drop out diffs, easy to work on, strong as a 44 basicly.
dislike, always leak at pinion or at diff, seems like gear set up has to be perfect, trinions

danas in general
easy to work on, spicer parts are cheap, american!, aftermarket support to no end

dislike
60s are expensive as hell, 44 is no stronger than a toy axle in general, gears have to be set up in diff.

thats just a chip off the iceberg, there both good axles, and can be built.

personally i like light weight and over time have strayed from toy axles, so 44s are up my alley
I have ran 42s on stock toy axles in the snow and mud and never broke a part.

dana 60/70s built with arbs is the ideal setup if you have money (in my opinion)

it can go on and on
just comes down to personal preference

In my opinion it boils down to, do you want light and nimble with Toyota axles and 35-40" tires max, or do you want to be able to just drive biligerantly (excuse that spelling) with tons and a 40"+ tire? For trails in my area you want a skinnier rig or you're going to be hitting trees going to a trail if you don't do 6 pt turns. So I'll probably never go to tons unless I did custom length.

If you can find a good deal on an Toyota FJ80 axle its a good compromise between the two.  They are wide, light, and very strong in stock form...main expense is the steering.

When I first built my truck back in 99' I wanted to use the FJ80 axle, but the lack of hi steer kits made me buy a diamond. I dont regret the purchase but the 80 was my first pick. Now that Hellfire has a knuckle for it. If I were doing it all over again I'd go 80 for sure.

You can't beat the cheap reliability of toyota axles, but imo once you throw the 40's on yota axles your gonna start having problems. I'd say 38's max for toyotas on rocks.  You have no idea what your missing until you wheel the 1 tons though, the width and weight down low is just awesome, and it's nice to throw the pedal down and not worry about breaking. I'd say it's really all up to you to decide what will work best for yourself, if it's your only vehicle or dd, you wheel really tight trails, or never plan to run above a 38 then I would go toyotas. If you want the width, can't keep your toyota axles in one piece, and want to run 40's and up then go 1 tons.

X2 on the fj80's, best of both worlds. I would run those over anything if I could find a set.

There is no point. I'm on 40's and I skid my diffs all the time, I don't want the 42s though cause there honestly pointless big dumb fun tires.

I vote fj80 axles front and rear. Which is what I have. I did a custom centered housing for the rear which runs a 9.5" diff. I am currently working on the front, stock front fj80 housing with Hellfire Fab knuckles and Hy steer arms.

Still more work to do.

This will put me 8" wider then stock (4 per side) with much bigger brakes same diff I was already using and a little more weight.

it all depends on weight and tire size, my 90 4runner is ok with fully built yota axles on 35's, only been through 2 sets of ring and pinyons.
but my fj80 is getting tons(d60/14b) cause its got a vortek 5.7/4l60e/4.3 atlas with 42" iroks
and yota axles would never survive under the 6500lb pig

True, but I think we are all talking about a mini not a heavy 80. There is no reason that a 4500lb mini truck with 37"s cant last a really long time. Heck im the flippin post child for it. I've been on 37" since 05'. Personally I think its all based on how careless you want to be. aka LAZY. If you want to drive by braille or if you want to try to pick a line.

Crap, this thread is perfect: my buddy has a HP 60 kingpin and 10.25 for sale $1200 and I was thinking about selling my built-ish Toy axles to buy the tons. I have 37s and didn't think about the whole "ground clearance" issue... duh.  :slap: Spend $1200 for axles, maybe $1600 for tires and $500 for wheels. F that!!!

Toyota axles for me; gotta get Longs someday.
