Another project
« on: Oct 09, 2011, 05:36:57 PM »
Went to a party and was introduced to a guy "into LandCruisers".
Turns out he was trying to sell one he has had parked at his parents house for ten years.
Long story short, $600. bucks later and it was mine.
Body is very rough but frame is great, some fresh gas and it idles away like new.
Has a spring over, 35s and Chevy power steering box done, tires are all cracked but the wheels are decent.
Haven't really got the room but i could not pass it up.

I smell a Resto-Rock Rod in the works! Hopefully you didnt get rid of these - "Will be selling the 15" tire/wheel combo and going to 17" stuff" from your other build. Unfortunently, I sense that you will be making all of us FJ40 guys look like hacks after your done with this build. Will be watching this one for sure!

Keeping the 42s for the 40 has crossed my mind but for now it will be getting the 37-16s off our 80 series as it is getting new 37" BFG KM2s on 17" wheels.
I did pick up a 2bl Holley ProJection throttle body unit for it off EBay so it will be getting that.
Just going to go through the brakes and diffs before getting it back on the road.
My son will drive it for now pretty much as is while we collect parts.

Found a set of fenders, that i could not pass on.

Marlin supplied kits for the front diff and Tcase rebuild as well as rotors for a brake upgrade.
Will be using late Runner calipers.

Pulled the trans and Tcase today, was only going to rebuild the Tcase but will be going through the trans now too.

Have a number of Cruiser 411 thirds so i picked a pair, replaced seals, checked the gear patterns, backlash and painted them up to replace the ones the diffs came with.

Painted the underside of the new fenders with Chassis Saver rust paint, put it on to the point of running so it soaks into the lap joints and all the reinforcing plates.

The fenders seem to rot from the inside out so i figure it can't hurt.
Scrapped the floors so i can rust paint them, i want to replace the tub but who knows when that will happen so i will clean them up for now.

Pulled the front diff down for a knuckle rebuild, third came out and found 3.70 gears.

Dug through parts stash and swapped in a used set of 4.11s.

Knuckles are back together but i have to fix the dent in the housing before the third can go back in.

Unfortunately these are the small pattern knuckles so they won't be getting a Histeer swap for now.

Haven't got the diff back together yet but it won't stop raining so i needed something else to do so i took off the leaking oilpan to fix.
Turns out it's rusted through under the skid plate, so.

Cut out the rusted area.

Made a patch panel.

Welded it in.

Reinstalled the skid plate.

Should last for a while.

Pan is back on so i could moved on to grinding off a patch a PO had welded on over a hole and dent in the front diff.
The ring gear ate it's way through the housing creating it's own clearance so why remove the dent.
It was just covered over.

I pounded out the dent and cleaned the area so i can weld on armor later.
Installed the regeared third (4.11s) and put in the axles, cut down backing plates, new rotors and larger 4Runner calipers.

I don't want to run the Warn hubs the truck came with, and i don't have a set that will fit the longer axles but i did find that the drive flanges off a 80 series Cruiser fit the bill and will do for now.

Trans, Tcase and shafts are back in, rear third is changed out with 4:11.
Found a set of 55 series Asin hubs to replace the Warns.
Pulled the sheet metal off the front end,
found a hood with a whole lot less bondo.
Coated the underside of the hood and new fenders with panel guard.

Few more pieces cleaned up and painted.

Pulled off the hard top and will be selling, got the power steering worked out.
Added a Spartan locker to the rear

Cut the doors down, straight across though.
Will have to move the upper hinge to under the body line in the door now.

Sprayed some paint on the underhood portions of the fenders, apron, bib and hood.

Got the heater pulled and my son found a second dead rat when he pulled it apart to clean and paint it.
Dash got scuffed up just before it started to rain, so out came the tarp.
