junkyarding for leaf springs
« on: Sep 15, 2011, 07:28:19 AM »
so my friend and i went on a rear spring search. found the chevy 63's from a two-wheel drive 1/2 ton. we also looked at some f-150's.
the leafs in the f-150's looked like they would work. has anyone used them with good results? just curious. i've read almost all the
chev spring swap threads, but the tire size may hang those up. (33").

also found front waggy packs. they had 6-7 leafs. looked to be a good fit for the front. has anyone had sucess with that one?
thanks.

i did a search yesterday. the ford springs are what i'll go with. i'm only going to run 33's to start, so they seem to be the best compromise.
i found a guy that did an anti-wrap 1/2 spring on the top of the pack. is this something worth considering?
thanks for the response.

just type f150 in the suspension mod section of the forum. there were many posts of builds and stuff. there were some links to the pirate site as well.
it looks as if the way to mount the springs is to go short-side foreward. then, relocate anchor/shackle mounts. the 1/2 leaf runs on the short-side to the centering pin.

All the full size truck springs work great, if you are ok with a fair amount of body roll and axle wrap.  My suggestion for the 63s, or F-150 springs is to make sure you add a good set of shocks (No, Bilstiens are not that great, you need something that can be revalved) and anti-wrap bar to the build.

How much lift will you get from the F150's on a 88 4runner?

Its all going to depend on what the truck was used for, and how worn in the springs are.  My 63" chevies give me between 3 and 4"  of lift.  My buddy has an identical spring pack, and he's got about 6" of lift, maybe a little less.  Mine are way more broken in, more flexy, and a much softer ride.

ideally, for offroad purposes, you'll want to go for the springs that are under beat up, worn out trucks.  They won't give you as much lift, but the springs are going to be well worn, and much more flexible.  trucks with tool beds and flatbeds are typically good candidates.
