leaky transfercase
« on: Sep 09, 2011, 11:28:24 PM »
So my transfercase has had a slight leak for a while and the other day I decided to fix the problem.  I dropped the whole thing out of the truck, pulled it all apart, and replaced all of the paper gaskets and seals with new ones.  I then put it back in and it still leaks.  I can see little drops of gear oil forming at the bottoms of the new gaskets i put in.  Any ideas why???

Did you use Hylomar on both sides of the gasket?

(I did, and mine doesn't leak   )

Did you use Genuine Toyota gaskets? I didn't use any sealer on mine and no leaks.

Maybe you have some rough spots or tiny grooves in your sealing surfaces of your cases. If that's the case, you're going to need some sealer like emsvitil mentioned. It shouldn't take much.

Sucks to have to pull it again. If you don't, you know it's going to drive you crazy. At least it wil go quicker the second time.

Wipe the surfaces with some brake clean and knock down any high spots you feel with a file. The sealer should handle the low spots.

Yea it's going to all be coming out again soon.  Now my question is should I keep the gasket and add sealer or just put sealer on it and chuck the gasket

I used both......

Harley dealers have hylomar if you have trouble finding it.

Whats the difference between hylomar and just a gasket maker from the auto parts store.

i used honda bond, with no paper gasket. main thing on this is both surfaces have to be free of grease and oil. lightly sand the contact areas with 320 grit paper and use any ultra grey silicone, i use honda bond 10.00 a tube at honda dealer. use it on all jobs at work, never had any leaks. http://www.inlinefour.com/oemhoho.html this is what most japanese car companies use to put together transmissions and timing covers, thery are getting away from paper gaskets...

We used black rtv on my buddys j**p a couple years ago. Works fine, too. And his case takes ATF which is much thinner than GL-5.

Marlin says paper gasket are a must and if you want sealer to use Gasketcinch or Hylomar. The reasons for the gaskets is the clearences are not right without the paper gaskets. He also says no to any type of RTV. I listen to the man, he knows alot more about the Toyota T-cases then I do. We had this discussion around our campfire at MC-10.

well I took the transmission out, re-sealed everything back up and put it back in.  Filled it with fluid and guess what.  It still leaked.  So i took the flashlight and started looking over every inch of the case to see where it is coming from.  Turns out that it was a hair line crack in the side of the case that is leaking.  So out comes the case for the third time and its time for a new housing.
