38x12.50 TSL's
« on: Sep 04, 2011, 07:13:44 AM »
Can anyone who is running or has run bias 38x12.50 TSL's give me an honest opinion about them. I am thinking this will be my next tire, but am a little concerned about the width. I have 2" back spaced 15x 8" wheels and I want the extra height that the 38 gives to help with diff clearance.

Well I don't have the most experience with them but I  did get to run a pair for one snow trip.  and they made my 35 in toyo mts look silly.  I plan to run a set on my toyota based buggy.  Hope that helps some.

I may occassionally run them in the snow so thanks it does help! A few reasons I am considering them over SX's is they are a little taller, and less weight.  I may drive to and from some trails as well.

I don't know if they are any taller, They should be on the same carcus.  They will be lighter for sure but the sx have good side lugs which imho are super important in the rocks.

I have a set of them on some 15x8 rims on my 4runner and have had really good luck with them. I got them pretty much worn down to the wear bars. I grooved all of them and my only traction issues are trying to climb muddy granite ledges. I am always on the hunt to find another used set. I usually run the pressure down between 6 or 8psi on dry trail and haven't blown a bead yet.  On the street i usually run about 20psi. The only down side to these tires are that they don't work well for me in the snow, but again, I don't have much rubber on them left.

I really like my 36" SX's and would recommend them to anyone, just looking for something a little bigger, I am still somewhat considering the 38" sx, but Interco has them being a little smaller.

I run 38.5x14.50x15 SX's and they are Not to wide,,, IMO I also run them on a 10 wide rim,, the "all around" performance in mud snow and rocks,, cant be beat!  The tire pressure needs to dam near be perfect on the road,, but right about 22lb the ride smooth as a baby's ass.. Any thing other than that they will shake you off the road...  :eyebrow:  lol  I have been running this particular tire for 9 years now... And I wont change!  :twocents:

I have some 34" bias TSLs.  They aren't really round but they sure work good and are indestructable.  I run mine on beadlocks because they came off the rim real easy without, but I don't think you will have a problem like this with the 38s.

As stated above tire pleasure is critical on the street.  Low 20s for sure.

Thanks guys I am leaning toward buying 38x12.50 tsl's for this upcoming season.  I was playing with the idea of 39.5 iroks but I still like to drive it on the street occasionally.  The 38's will be significantly smaller and narrower than the 39.5's though.  My 36sx's measure about 31" to 32" aired down to 6 psi, looking for a little more height.

I would say the tsl and sx have very comparable manners on and off road, so if you love your sx's performance now, you'll feel a similar way about the tsl's. between the two i'd do with the sx because of their side lugs.

I wondered how I missed this thread, then I saw the date. lol  That is moose season, so I was atop my 38s about 30 miles away from the tow vehicle.  I run these tires on Allieds at about 4 psi, offroad only.  I wouldn't buy these for any on road driving, can't afford that many sets!  I haven't had an issue with them, and don't see me changing.  I don't do "rock crawling" like a lot of folks here.  To get to the drainage where I hunt I go through lowland swamps and bogs...quite a bit of muskkeg...so we do a lot of sidehilling and bushwhacking to get around bottomless bogs.  Once we get into the river system it's gravel, rocks, and water, as well as up and down rocky banks.  All this to say that, even when loaded with 3 weeks of camping gear or 800# of moose, these tires rock.

good to hear,  I have a tow rig but occasionally like to drive it to and from the trail. I am thinking the 38s will be a good comprise of more height and not much more weight than my current 36 SX's.  Just trying to decide what to buy when spring gets close.

Thanks!!  the 38s look way bigger, and both look pretty wide must be 10" rims.  I think I will be happy with the 38s if thats what I end up with. 38s look to be about two inches bigger?

good point!!  :smack:  I said that because everyone says the 38s are only a 1/2" to an 1" bigger than a 36.  I am hoping if I get them I will be happy.

I had 12.5 x38's on my old 85 (no pics) LOVED THEM, good on the road for what they were... Awesome every where else. Had them for about 2 years and they still had good tread when I sold the truck. But that was about 15 years ago, maybe a different compound used today......I had some 12.5 X 35 LTB's on the current Toy, they didn't last a year.....

I had a set of 38 12.50 TSL's on my '83 long box and a set of 38.5 14.50 SX's on an '89 ex-cab. Both DD's and they both were about the same on road. The sx's rode a little better on cold mornings, but they seamed to wear faster. I had them both on ten wides and the 12.50's were pizza cutters compared to the SX's. A lot lighter too. I bet a 39' irok would be right between the 2 in weight.

I am waiting for my tires to be shipped, I was going to have to tube the firewall to fit 38's anyways. I also don't put very many street miles on it, if I remember right the 39.5's are only 5lbs heavier than my current 36" tsl sx's

My old 38.5 Baja claws weighed 102lbs and my 42' Iroks are 95lbs. The 42' TSL's I have are 107lbs. The Iroks are much lighter than the same sized TSL and way more squishy.

Im going to run them on my 15x8's with 2" backspacing, do you guys (Snow walker) think i will need spacers? I'm not worried about the front but the back may rub on the frame. I really don't want to run spacers,  i am also running the stock 85 rear axle. I didn't have any problems with my 36x12.50 sx's.

I had no problems with the 12.50's on my '83 and like I said they were on ten wides. If your truck is a flex monster they might rub on the frame. They were the cheap chrome mods, not sure what the back spacing was.
