1983 Toyota Sandtana 4x4 Motorhome
« on: Aug 30, 2011, 10:22:21 AM »
So about a year ago i com across this add of craigslist that says 4x4 toyota camper.. all it says is needs work $1,000 so i call this guy like 5 times and i never hear back. about a month later i get a call from his saying sorry i have been busy do you still want the camper? i really want it gone i will take 500 for it. you wouldnt believe how fast i started selling stuff. ( i didnt have a job) a month later i had it at my house..

When i first saw the this it looked like it had been sitting in a jungle for 5 years which it kinda had.. (reedsport  oregon up by loon lake if your familiar with that area. But when i say this inside it had rat crap EVERYWHERE and it was pretty moldy. I could have cared less.  I got a 4wd camper for the price of what the axles cost.

it took me 2 weeks to get all the rat crap and  mold out. i wish i would have taken pictures of it before and after but i didnt. when i got it she had a pretty good rod knock at mid to high rpms. i threw a crank kit in it and she was good to go. I have driven it probley 500 miles so far and now its what i live in when i go to my mining site where i work. its really small but it gets the job done.. i plan one attaching a 2 door wall tent to it with a wood fire place on the outside so i dont have to heat it with propane

i will have to take somne pictures of the inside next time im at the mine.

Wow these are so rare. You got a score of a lifetime on that thing. I have never seen one of these as a first gen though I have seen 2 or 3 2nd gen versions on CL. Usually asking an arm and a leg though. Definitely subscribed, this thing is awesome!

Very cool rig.

Yeah i have never seen them before. i have had a few offers for it but i dont think i will ever sell it.. its not in the best condition but still its one of those things you will never find again. i've tried to contact sandtana about it and there out of business. I want to find out more about the thing. I also figured it would have 4.37 gears so it would have some more power but i check them and they were 4.10.. a little disappointed but it does alright.

Nah, that was what I was thinking too if I ever found one. What I am curious to know is how much of the rear fenderwells, if at all, you can cut out? I was thinking to keep the COG low to cut fenders and minimal lift, but I am not sure if you can afford to take any out of the rear.

What??

I believe he's asking if, because of the mismatched tire sizes, your t-case is binding at all in 4wd.

That thing is awesome.

Sweet find.

33's will usually fit a first gen w/o any lift do to the fender design.  If they wont clear, adding another leaf spring below the main leaf that is almost the same length as the the main, will yeild 1-2" of lift and not stiffen the ride.  Some 5.29's with the 33's should help with its highway performance.

It's a state search for CL. I found a bunch of Toyota RV's in Texas but none a 4x4.

You cant cut the fenders at all it would cun into the inside.. the rear can squeeze 33's but the front cant.

I believe he's asking if, because of the mismatched tire sizes, your t-case is binding at all in 4wd.

That thing is awesome.

OOOOHH Nah i havent locked the hubs in since i put the mis matched tires on.. i just put them on because then 30's that it came with (90% tread) were so old from no use the were weather checked and the first time i drive it ten miles i blew one out. so i wasnt going to risk it on my 400 mile trip the following day.

Yeah the rears fit 33's but i tried them up front and i couldnt even get half the turning radius. I really want 5.29's because it would be used for speed and like you say it would give it more power.
Sweet RV!

what are the gear codes??

What do you mean gear codes? like gear ratio? therer 4.10's front and rear if thats what your talking about?
