Topic: FJ40 4 Speed Whine

Hey guys,

Just picked up a 71 FJ40 with a 4 speed in it.  I'm just wondering how noisy the drivetrain is supposed to be?  I'm getting a whine from the transmission in all four gears.  The fact that all four gears sound similar and it shifts fine leads me to believe that it is normal, but I'm by no means experienced with these drivetrains...  If it's not normal, I'll rebuild I suppose.  Thanks in advance!!!

Fj40 drivetrain are really nosie. Might be from your tcase gear which are the nosie gears. I got used to it before converted to mini truck toy box then the whine stop.

Hard to say what's going on here, a whine is typically what you hear from a bearing. Not much experience with gear noise, only a rear axle pinion that started chipping apart. It started out sounding like a hum, progressed to a growl and in the end, it sounded like an Apache Helocopter was chasing me!

When I had mine running it would whine too. I had it gone through and it still did it. I'm not an expert but I think it's just the nature of the beast being a gear driven tranny.
