sometimes they are a good thing. we actually set prescibed burns. but theyre bad thing when the fuels are dry and the loading is heavy. having it not burn for 40+ years will make it burn to a parking lot. which then will more than likely change the fuel type. so if it were a timber fuel model and a fire totally nuked it. it'll take decades for maybe a some trees to grow back. and thats if the FS goes in there, plants trees and theres no significant erosion (rain).  just sayin its important especially this year.

I only bring a Propane grille/stove to the forest. Everything else is battery powered to minimize any risk of fire on my part. Strangely, we were allowed open fires last year at MCR which was a strange but pleasant surprise. But I wouldn't count on it again this year.  8)

And this is why I say natural fires are a good thing! It removes waste on the forest floor!!!!!!! Adds nutrients to the soil and some trees need fire to open their seeds.

these forests in CA are EXTREMELY dry. we're getting fires everyday because of lightning. no need to have a human caused one!

thanks!
Yes they are!! Sadly, we are also getting human-caused fires far too often....

The problem, I think, is the makeup of the forests now. 100+ years ago, fires did burn "naturally", but the forests were not as choked with fuels and trees as they are now. Natural fires would burn through every 15-35 years, large trees would survive and the brush/fuels were burned up and regeneration would take place. Forests now burn with catastrophic results, in some places literally cooking the soil and burning up nutrients. Fire suppression in the Sierra Nevada has contributed to this in alot of ways. Forests are overloaded with fuel and small trees and burn way too hot, large trees perish, everything...leaving a wasteland for many years.

Thats because we are selfish creatures and have not let nature take its own course, for our own personal gains.

I thought this was supposed to be a fire permit thread? Oh well, guess that's why it's under chit chat.

couldnt of said it better myself..

i work for the FS in CA and about 90% of our fires are human caused

we took on this responsiblity when the no burn policy that took effect after the big 1910 fires (3 million acres burned). when that happen we had 100% full suppression on fires. until the late 80's when we let yosemite burn naturally in 88. unfortionatly we've had to learn the hard way. it burn millions of acres and took a season ending event to put it out. with the no burn policy it also introduce a bunch of other problems (bug kill, mega fires, deaths) but for the sake of this thread everyone is correct. natural fires are the way it should be. but cant be with the growing area of wildland urban interface. homes burn and politics come into play. then if these fires blow up they destroy the entire ecosystem of that area. prescibed burning and fuel mitigation is possibly the only way. but theres always new and different things to learn and try.

Currently all burn permits are suspended in California, according to Cal-Fire.

Wouldn't get caught burnin a fire right now..
Sucks I was going to go camping this weekend but now I don't want to :(

Just a reminder. Get your 2013 California Campfire Permit here:

http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/sequoia/passes-permits/?cid=fsbdev3_059516

Getting caught with a fire without a permit is pretty expensive.

Well if its free it aint as bad as I had thought. But its still the principle of the fact that you have to have a permit for a simple campfire.

It's so when people do stuff like this the ranger can ask for his permit and show him exactly why he's getting a citation. It takes away the "I didn't know".

I found these on another forum where the guy was showing his campsite and didn't seem to think anything was wrong with them.
