Big master cylinder, small caliper?
« on: Jun 27, 2011, 11:38:31 PM »
Ok so I have a fj80 master cylinder I want to put in my sased 94, but it has the factory solid axle brakes and I don't have the money to upgrade that right now. So will the calipers take the extra pressure from the bigger master? Are there any problems I'll run into doing this?

Big master, small calipers = less pressure at the calipers...........

If you don't like a stiff pedal you should get a dual diaphragm booster. I think the bigger mc should work fine. Look at the brake write up on the pirate Toyota bible.

My guess is  the pedal would not be stiff if i swapped to the ifs rotars and calipers .   I can read every page on PBB and it will not change the fact that  my pedal was stiff.   when i install the ifs rotars   i will swap the MC back   and see how it does .

I have a 1 inch bore mc off a V6 4runner, V6 calipers, and vented rotors. Mine pedal is really stiff. I'm a big guy and I have to push hard just to come to a slow rolling stop. I was referring to the pbb topic about upgrading to the dual diaphragm booster. It's suppose to help a lot with a bigger mc.

I ran a fj80 master cylinder with stock 85 small calipers for almost 8 years before getting a dual diaphram booster.  brakes were a bit stiff, but not bad.  the dual diaphram booster will definitley make a world of difference.  i was going to upgrade to the ifs calipers and bigger rotors, but after the booster swap, i'm going to leave it alone.  it stops no problem. with hardly any pressure with one foot, it stops like new car

not sure.  i got mine from a 1990 ext pickup with a 3.0 in it.  I think all the 3rd gen trucks, and 2 gen 4runners have them.  don't quote me on that though.

I think V6 trucks and 4runners have them. I think some people use T100 boosters. And maybe some others.

I'm doing the same thingon my 87 runner, I dont have all my parts to rebuild my solid front axle so im using the v6 brake booster. and I have the stock ifs width axle in back. the brakes feel pretty good to me? I'm going to upgrade to fj rotors and ifs calipers soon as i get money to rebuild the whole axle. if you ask me you can drive it around for a while till some more cash comes your way!

My old master cylinder is leaking like a sieve on my '84 with stock brakes.  It cleaned the paint up nicely on the firewall.   :ack:  I am replacing it with an FJ80 master and T100 booster.  I am dreading the brake bleeding by myself ...   :crossed:  Does anyone have any one-man brake bleeding tips/tricks?
