HELP!!!! 82 22r Fuel issue
« on: May 19, 2011, 04:33:44 PM »
I have an 82 22R. It was having intermittent idleing problems but would idle if I kept my foot on the gas. Then would go away on its own. I noticed the new fuel filter was dam near empty when it was running at any rpm.

I just replaced the fuel pump(mechanical) and now the truck wont run at all unless I am constantly reving it. It smells really really rich and smokes. anyone had this? Thanks

Austin

What does the fuel level in the carb float bowl window look like?

It was so full I couldnt see the fuel level. I pulled the window and blasted the float and needle with carb cleaner. Nothing changed. Pretty sure it is stuck open. Runs great at high RPMs but chokes out at low RPMs. So I pulled the carb to rebuild it. Also tried banging it with a hammer. No luck.

Had the carb rebuilt by a reputable guy here in town. Followed the directions in the FSM to tune the carb and had it running great. Then I took it out on the highway and when I got off it went down to idle and glug glug stall!!! It starts right up with the throttle wide open and the float bowl is full to the top again.

I put all new fuel lines in and purged about 12 oz. of fuel before I connected it to the new carb. Also put in a new fuel filter.

Is it possible the new fuel pump is giving it too much pressure? Causing the needle and seat to stay open after i open it up?

I have never run one. What years did they have them on? Also my pump only came with one gasket. But I do have one maybe I'll try that.

Cool. The pump I took out did not have one. The last motor swap I did we put one in cause my buddy swore it needed one and we couldnt get any real fuel. So I havent run one before.

Gonna throw the old fuel pump back in and see what happens.

Looks like the carb wasnt the issue after all. F%ck

Had the same problem with my '82. Adjust the float bowl height by bending the brass tang at the fuel pin. Move it up for less and vice versa for more. Toyota carbs suck imo! Good luck!
I've got the most liftedest truck in town, that little jap truck done stand no chance gainst my Chevy. My Chevy gots a V8 more lift an bigger tires, and an exhaust system, whats yer tuna can got, a V4, and them tires look like they is offa Saturn Corulla. The dealer instulled my lift, so ya no its done right, you just try to foller me throo them rocks an see what a reel truck can do.

ok if rex was still on he is great with these carbs.  here is what i remember from when mine did this on top of the hill at fordyce I called rex from there and he fixed it over the phone.  There is a diaphram in the fuel inlet that if it has a hole in it will not let the carb idle at all.  ill try to do some more research on it.

piraate searching (x2 on the auxiliary accelerator pump. Try unplugging the vacuum to this and see if the problem goes away. Usually the diaphram will be ruptured causing the engine to suck raw fuel in causing a rich condition.) still searching

I have never had my auxiliary accelerator pump connected. The carb was just completely overhauled. That new pump just has too much pressure. Got it running fine now gonna put a fuel pressure reducer eventually.
