building a crawler
« on: May 16, 2011, 02:46:41 PM »
I'm building a crawler using chassis plans I bought from azrockcrawler. Is there a typical (common) truck I should by for a donor vehicle for  the drive train? It seems like toyota is very common. Any specific model year, years? Just trying to know where to start.

x 2 wider than the mini truck axels too  E locker and high pinion front would work great unless you wanna got with tons or something larger

The rear has a 9.5 ring gear, and is a full floater.

'79 Ford F350/'83 1 ton Chevy/2009 Chevrolet Corvette/2009 3/4 ton Chevrolet...everything else should be after market anyway.  This get you the front axle/rear axle/engine/trans in order.

Why on earth would you start with a Taco???????????  I'd always recommend starting with something that provides good bang for the buck.  In addition, you need to determine what it is that you TRULY want to accomplish ultimately, what type of terrain you'll be operating in the majority of the time, what your budget is, and what you can do vs. paing someone else to do.  I've had ALOT of rigs over the years and have an appreciating for early Yotas, "some" Jeeps, etc., but can truly tell you that no matter what I start with on projects now, chances are almost everything will get upgraded anyway, so starting with a complete donor vehicle doesn't really make any sense in my world.  .02

First of all he said he is going to build a chassis and just needs the drivetrain.  2nd he has only posted 1 time, 1 and done. That was almost 2 months ago. Why are people still posting what "they" would do and not address the posters question?
