22re problems
« on: Mar 12, 2011, 07:48:30 PM »
Well I am new to the Toyota world, but not rock crawlin. I have just acquired an 85 4Runner, 22re... :blah:! Anyways, I barley got this thing home due to the motor running like :pokinit:!

Well this is what is is doing. When you start it, it starts and idles great. As soon as you drive about a block, it starts to cut out and dies. It will do this 4-5 times and then the stalling goes away. THAT'S NOT ALL!!!! after it runs without stalling, it is gutless! I could hardly do 50MPH on the freeway, and i could smell gas. It is just sluggish all the way through the power band. :maddest:

P.S.- I am running 35" MTR'S, 5.29:1's, Auto trans.

Thanx in advance!!!

it might be your MAF sensor.

I've never driven one with an auto, but I've heard nothing but terrible things about them, that added with the tire size might contribute to the sluggishness.

Maybe check injectors/clean/replace??? Do a tune up with all OEM parts from toyota. No fram, autolite, K&N, junk stuff.

Edit: Check the positioning of your Throttle Position sensor. Get a Toyota shop manual, feeler gauges, and ohm meter and check resistance and clearance of the throttle body. Pretty simple to do.

Yes... but dont know why?????? I an getting new exhaust next week. I gave it a tune up and ran some Seafoam through it. It runs better after it gets warmed up, but has a hesitation on acceleration until it gets warm :_order:?

Could be a fuel issue as well.... fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator... you can simply try pinching the vacuum hose that comes out of the fuel pressure regulator and drive it and see if it still loses power.. dont leave it pinched though.. only for testing.

You might also check the timing.  It may be ok towards idle but off just enough to run rough any other time.
