Marlin 4.70!!! I need your inputs TONIGHT!
« on: Mar 02, 2011, 10:54:09 PM »
Ok...after tons of searching, finally found a guy with Marlin 4.70XD's! He finally called me and I'm picking it up tomorrow. He has two sets...21 and 23 splines, besides getting a more durable/stronger rear case...what's the biggest benefit for going with 23 splines. If I get his 21 splines, everything bolts right up and if I get the 23 splines, I'll have to buy a 23 spline coupler which will cost me another 130-150.00. Which way should I go with? :dunno:

ask your self how hard am i going to wheel this rig...if its hard hard then id go with 23 for the reasurance that its stronger if its just a moderate wheeler and dd that your not takeling the biggest and baddest trails you would be safe with 21 :thumbs:

For me, and I did, I'd go the 23 spline and be done with it for a LONG time!!

V6 = for sure 23 spline
4 cyl = maybe 21 spline but I would still lean toward 23 spline just cause I like peace of mind

Make sure that Marlin has the 23 inputs in stock. I had to wait for months for them to come back in and they never did but I found a guy who had a new one for sale

I've spent some major money recently and my wife's starting to question wether my purchases are needs or flat out wants. I told her there's only two more parts needs after these t case gears, I didn't mention the price. :lipsrsealed:

if you have a 4cyl, 21 spline is fine.

that 23spline coupler is about 150 bucks by itself

my dad runs a dual case setup with a 4cyl and he has been wheeling it for about 10yrs now and its been fine with a 21 spline setup and he has been on many trails from simple like bald mtn to more extreem as in dusey ershm and swamp and has had no problem. i run a single case 21 spline 470 with a 4cyl and as the same have had no problems. btw im running 35s and he is running 37s. just my 2cents

when my buddy did his duals he went with the 23 since he had a higher horsepower motor, when we compared the two side by side i couldn't believe the difference! It's always nice to have the parts already installed even if it is a mild wheeler you never know what you'll do with it later on also you know? i say do it once do it right. i would have spent the extra money if i had seen the difference before i did mine i'll say that at least. But i have also wheeled the crap out of the 21 and been fine. And your wife will get over it man they always do! ha ha

If you are running a single case 21's will be fine if you are going duals I would recomend 23's due to the additional torque load you'll be applying to them.

go with the 23 spline . reason being for later on down the road if you decide to go with bigger tires or an engine swap. another reason being resale value peolple like seein the 23 spline in the rear case . It sounds like you already have an adapter and a 23 spline coupler so if its unused call the the company you bought it from and see about swapping couplers. I know marlin will do it, not to sure about other vendors.

I have had my 21's installed since 2003'ish and they have suffered alot of abuse but only 10-20 times a year.  They have seen the 22RE, 5MGE, and a 4.3 and never a problem ( I am steady on the skinny). If I was to do it again, I would go full bore, all the extras.  Soon or a later I am gonna have a failure, just wondering what its gonna be  :headscratch:

I decided to go with the 21 splines and use that coupler money for Marlins chromoly output shaft kit instead. I figure if anything's going to go bad, it'd be that right?
