RUF Caster Issues
« on: Feb 25, 2011, 06:48:55 PM »
due to the offset location of the center pin on my RUF leafs, i'm having caster issues. If i have to, could i drill a more centered hole for he center pin to change where my perch mates with the leaf spring?(WHen i say more centered, I'm talking about centered between the eyes of the leaf) What issues might i have with this?( I haven't yet installed my hi-steer and steering box)

what he said... along with springs are hard to drill....

how long are your shackles.... i have 7 leaf rufs. no caster issues.. the biggest reason to do rufs is to push the axle forward. if you want the stock location use a the front main leaf with the RUF pack under it...
Those are some huge welds!

i made some boomerang shackles, about 5" eye to eye. I'm using the stock front hanger. I'm trying to fix my caster(If i'm looking at the driver side steering arm, the part of the arm facing the front on the truck is higher, so the steering arm is at an upward angle). now it looks like if i fix the caster, my hi-steer tie rod will hit the top of the leaf spring! Right now it only clears the top of the leaf by 1/2" at ride height. Any suggestions? will a drop front hanger cure these issues for me?(I'm only running 33" tires)

i have 6 leaf ruf with stock hanger and 5 inch straight shackles. i have no caster issues. only problem pinion angle sucks. but driving down the road even on the freeway no vibrations or anything. put your hysteer on and drive it go from there. but yes on the drop hanger. most people install one to correct caster and pinion angle.

The Rear leaf pack(main and military Leaf) I used were out of an 80 pickup. i then added 4 more leaves to this. Are these fine to use for the RUF mod? Are the earlier rear packs more offset?

I think part of my caster issue is the bottom leaf of my 6 leaf pack. It's not an overload, of course, but it was the bottom leaf of the original rear leaf pack. It's quite stiff, so i'm thinking of replacing it with a flexier leaf. This way, maybe i can experiment with different ways of positioning the bottom leaf to affect the caster.
