Motor Swap
« on: Feb 25, 2011, 03:11:35 PM »
OK I have been given the key to the candy store. I did so trading with a wrecking yard and I can go pick out any motor I want. I am looking to keep all toyota. What motor would be a good swap into a 2nd gen rock crawler. Looking for a good power up grade and still be able to run my R151 Tranny.  Nothing that I have to hack the :pokinit: out of my truck.

3rz is a good 4 Cyl very little mod needed, with special bellhousing will bolt up to your R151 no problem. If you want a V6 go with the 3.4 will also bolt up to your R151
If you see it, its for sale.

The only 1UZ he has is out of a 1992 LS 400 with 188K miles on it. How are they to rebuild?

Ok I picked a 97 or 98 taco been in a light roll. He is going to let me get it running be for i pull it. I was told it has about 150K miles on it. So I cut the top off the cab to get to every thing better start looking and it is a Canadian built truck it dose not have 150K miles it has 150K Kilometers (93K Miles). My question now is hook it to my R151 tranny or keep the Taco 5 speed and my turbo truck rearend or the taco rear end? Any help would be great.

Not trying to thread jack but im still getting the pieces together to do this same swap. If anyone can help I would appreciate it ?  Here's my problem.  Way back when I went to duals I was set up with a 21 spline 4.7 in the front and 2.28 in the rear. Didn't know any better at the time  :dunno: So now I can only find the adaptor plate from the R150 to 21 spline from AA. Should I go ahead with this adaptor and the 21 spline or wait and replace the input gear to 23 and get the adaptor from Marlin.  I am not heavy on the pedal But if I wipe out the gear I will have to replace it with another 21 spline or spend $800.00 ish to go 23. This is my last piece to figure out before I pull the current 22r.  Any advice ?

the taco tranny 5 speen r150f can be used to make a hybrid trany in conjunction with your 151 use the 150 bell and front housing with the spacer plate the place your 151 tail housing behid this they bolt right up...this lets you retain your 23 spline gear driven case with out having to get a adapter to switch from the chain driven case  if you can get any motor the y not get an i force v8 out of a tundra that would be the ultimate motor in a toyota rock crawler IMO

I thought you could just swap the bell housing off a R150 and a R151 and you were good to go?  I was under the impression that the only differences were: 1st gear is lower on a 151, tail housing is different (for a gear drive case, but you can swap them back and fourth), and the bell housing was different (got the 3.0 vs the 22re, but again interchange able).

If I were you I would see if the bell housings swap. I seem to remember that the Supras use the same tranny (I think its called a R154) and guys who do the supra swaps just get the bell housing from the same car and hook it to a R150 or R151. It would have been more than a year ago that I read this so confirm it before you go out and try it!! (they may of had to do a input shaft swap as well...

Also the R150 and 151 are the same as a jeep AX-15 just with different housing, and input and output shafts. It is conceivable to put the back half of a R151 on the back of a AX-15 (including output shaft) so that a gear drive yota case will bolt to it (I have never seen anywhere where this has been done, but in theory it should work).

yes you can just bolt the bell housing of the 150 to the 151 and then you would have the lower first and reverse
