22re troubles
« on: Feb 16, 2011, 10:56:41 AM »
This is what i got. i have a 85 efi truck. i just rebuilt the whole motor. the motor is missing at idle some of the times, and when i give it the gas it stars to miss some of the times. it is never really constant. it will also some times die on me when it is idling. i have replaced the coil, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel pump, filter twice in the last month, checked all vacuum lines, throttle body was sucking air around the throttle shaft so i replaced the whole thing with a new one.  i have messed with the mass airflow sensor and it doesnt seem to be it. it has brand new injectors from lc engineering and a new fuel pressure regulator. checked compression and all cylinders are at 150.  i have been fighting this thing for weeks and just cant figure it out.  i think i have all the vacuum lines in the right place but cant really find a great diagram. this truck is a 85 efi with a/c. if any one has a good diagram it would help. also wondering about the air valve on the under side of the intake manifold. there is 2 coolant lines on it and wonder if i have them backwards. any pics of that would help out. thanks.

Have you inspected the accordion section of air intake tube?  It can develop cracks along the inner sections, idle issues.
Here is a link to an '85 FSM .  There are a few other manuals listed, the '85 links are about halfway through the first post.

Are the LC engineering injectors larger, or just rebuilt stock?  If the injectors are bigger do you have to compensate with a different MAS?  I know when adding larger injectors for my Supra I had to upgrade to a Lexus V-8 sensor to keep the air fuel ratio correct as far as the ecu was concerned.

What is the timing set at?  Any miss like this before the rebuild?

I was dealing with a really bad miss that was a lot like yours, unpredictable etc.. It was a combination of my TPS being out of spec and me not realizing that a 22re with a 268 cam and a street RV head would need a little more fuel than a stock setup. First, adjust the TPS back to stock with the directions presented on 4crawler.com since you took it off and its kind of a b*tch so be patient. Second, if you put the LC injectors in, it may be possible to compensate for the higher flow rate by making the mixture richer at the air flow meter and I think that is why people switch to an AFM from a larger engine. The Denso ones are great because you can play with the mixture by cracking the thing open and turning the gear inside counter clockwise (I think) to richen it out. I fixed my miss by going one tooth richer, adjusting my TPS and running diesel kleen in the gas because my injectors were filthy from the last engine having burned coolant. 4crawler is a great resource and will give you all the info about the old school injection. Good luck and post results.

i went out wheeling and the check engine light came on for my water thermo sensor. So i replaced it and it ran a little better. than i adjusted my mass airflow 2 teeth and now it is running great. the only problem is some one had already taken the top of the sensor off and adjusted it so i really dont know where stock is. How hard is it to find a used or new one and how much do they run?

It is relatively easy to find replacement MAF sensors, car-pars.com had eleven pages worth of them.  It looks like you could pick up a good(A rating) one from an '85 for as low as $50(near bottom of page 13), lower condition ones for less.

If you don't have to worry about smog checks in Utah, you might take it to a shop and have it tuned correctly for the mod's that you have.

Make sure to use electronic safe silicone when you seal the MAF up, otherwise the fumes will destroy the circuitry.

Dukey,  you don't need a new maf. If you moved it two notches counter clockwise, than it was probably at or one tooth off of stock.

Snowtoy, I'm really glad you reminded us all to use electrical grade silicone, i was about to seal mine with window sealant.
